Abstract
A sealing arrangement 30 provides annular sealing among generally annular, stationary, rigid components of a rotary machine such as a pump. Sealing is among a pump casing 32, a flange 34 and an adjustable wear liner 36 which form among them an annular sealing volume 40. Sealing is effected by a sealing ring 10 having an annular body 12 which includes a peripheral skirt 14 and a bulbous ring or hoop 16. A plurality of intermittent circumferentially spaced cavities 20, which are radially outwardly open, is formed in the ring 10, which is of incompressible, plastically deformable, sealing material such as rubber. When the sealing ring is compressed in the sealing volume, it is plastically deformed and excess material is displaced into the cavities 20. Sealing can be effected in a sealing volume having a large torelance in respect of volume which relaxes manufacturing tolerances on the components forming the sealing volume.
