Abstract
The invention relates to an ostomy appliance for collecting human waste in drainable and non-drainable ostomy appliances. The ostomy appliance having multi-layered filter external to the ostomy walls that prevents clogging. The ostomy appliance comprising: first and second walls connected to each other at or near their peripheries, the first wall having a stoma-receiving opening; a connection member connected to the first wall for attaching the appliance to a user; an aperture located in either of the first and/or second walls for permitting waste gases to exit the appliance; a multi-layer filter positioned adjacent and covering the aperture on an exterior surface of the respective first and/or second wall, wherein a layer of the filter is hydrophobic and wherein said hydrophobic layer is positioned directly adjacent the respective first and/or second wall, wherein the hydrophobic layer has a first side and a second side and wherein the first side is welded directly to the respective first and/or second wall, said connection holding the multi-layer filter relative to the wall.
Claims (26)
1. An ostomy appliance comprising: first and second walls connected to each other at or near their 5 peripheries, the first wall having a stoma-receiving opening; a connection member connected to the first wall for attaching the appliance to a user; an aperture located in either of the first and/or second walls for permitting waste gases to exit the appliance; 10 a multi-layer filter positioned adjacent and covering the aperture on an exterior surface of the respective first and/or second wall, wherein a layer of the filter is hydrophobic and wherein said hydrophobic layer is positioned directly adjacent the respective first and/or second wall, 15 wherein the hydrophobic layer has a first side and a second side and wherein the first side is welded directly to the respective first and/or second wall, said connection holding the multi-layer filter relative to the wall.
2. The ostomy appliance according to claim 1 wherein the hydrophobic 20 layer is Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
3. The ostomy appliance according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the filter includes a de-odorising layer positioned adjacent the hydrophobic layer. 25
4. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the de-odorising layer is preferably carbon based.
5. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the filter includes a gas and liquid impermeable layer positioned adjacent the de- 30 odorising layer.
6. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to5 wherein the layers of the filter are arranged in the order of hydrophobic layer, de-odorising layer and gas and liquid impermeable layer. 5
7. The ostomy appliance according to claim 6 wherein the de-odorising layer is positioned directly adjacent the hydrophobic layer and wherein the gas and liquid impermeable layer is positioned directly adjacent the de-odorising layer. 10
8. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein waste gas travels through the aperture in a direction substantially perpendicular to the first and/or second wall.
9. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein 15 waste gas travels through the hydrophobic layer in a direction substantially perpendicular to the first and/or second wall.
10. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein waste gas travels through the de-odorising layer in a direction substantially 20 parallel to the first and/or second wall.
11. The ostomy appliance according to claim 10 wherein the gas and liquid impermeable layer is configured to ensure that all gas entering the filter passes through the de-odorising layer in a direction substantially parallel to the 25 first and/or second wall.
12. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 11 wherein the first side of the hydrophobic layer is heat welded directly to the respective first and/or second wall.
13. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 12 wherein the first and second walls are connected to each other at their peripheries by welding. 5
14. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 13 wherein the aperture is positioned in a top half of the appliance.
15. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 14 wherein the aperture is positioned above the stoma-receiving opening.
16. The ostomy appliance according to claim 15, wherein the aperture is positioned directly above the stoma-receiving opening.
17. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 16 wherein 15 the aperture and/or filter is circular in shape.
18. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 17 including a plurality of apertures, wherein the multi-layer filter is positioned adjacent and covers each aperture.
19. The ostomy appliance according to claim 18 wherein the apertures are provided in the form of perforations in the second wall.
20. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 19 wherein 25 the multi-layer filter fully covers the aperture.
21. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 20 wherein the aperture is smaller than the filter. 30
22. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 20 wherein the aperture is substantially the same size and/or diameter as the filter.
23. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 22 wherein the first and second walls define a waste collecting chamber; and wherein the hydrophobic layer is in direct fluid communication with the 5 waste collecting chamber.
24. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 23 wherein the first and second walls define a waste collecting chamber; and wherein the filter is provided external of the first wall and/or second wall 10 which define the waste collecting chamber.
25. The ostomy appliance according to any one of claims 1 to 24 wherein the multi-layer filter has only two layers. 15
26. The ostomy appliance according to claim 1, substantially as herein described with reference to any embodiment disclosed. 1 / 7
