Abstract

A mobile pick and carry crane and corresponding method of operating the mobile crane is disclosed. Mobile crane operators rely on load chart tables that define crane capacity based on boom length, load radius, chassis articulation and ground slope. An operator may make an error when using the load tables which could result in tipping or structural failure of the crane. To remove operator error a mobile crane is provided which includes a body, a boom, a load winch, and a load rating calculation system. During a carry operation the load rating calculation system continuously calculates a load rating based on sensors measuring a spatial position and/or articulation of the body. The recalculated load rating is displayed to an operator and a load moment indicator limits operation of the crane when the recalculated load approaches or has reached the calculated maximum load rating.
