Abstract

Known closures for containers may not be readily suited for vacuum packaging applications. Provided herein is a closure that is suitable for vacuum packaging applications. The closure (14, 114) includes an overcap (16, 116) composed of a relatively flexible and impermeable polymeric material and a lid (18, 118) carried by the overcap. The overcap has an annular skirt (40, 140) extending along a longitudinal axis for coupling the closure to a container (12, 112), and an overcap web (44) extending continuously radially inwardly from the annular skirt. The lid is carried by the overcap radially within the annular skirt. The lid is composed of a relatively rigid metallic material. The lid has an annular rim (50) radially proximate to the annular skirt of the overcap, for sealing the closure to the container. A lid web (52) extends radially inwardly from the annular rim, and has at least one vent (54) therethrough, and is coupled to the overcap around the vent.
