Abstract

Process for producing a compatibilized material of polypropylene and polybutylene terephthalate by a continuous one-step extrusion process, preferably carried out in an inert atmosphere. In a first feed zone of the extruder, a polypropylene polymer, an allyl epoxy compound, a styrene compound and a peroxide are introduced as initiator, and the constituents are heated to a temperature above the melting point of the polypropylene polymer and the decomposition temperature of the peroxide, while they are subjected to continuous intimate mixing. A pure polybutylene terephthalate is introduced into the extruder in a position after the first feed zone where the polypropylene polymer is in the molten state, to cause the polybutylene terephthalate to melt and mix intimately with the molten polypropylene. The resulting mixture is extruded in a manner known per se. A compatibilized material of polypropylene and polybutylene terephthalate polymers, having synergistic properties from both, is obtained by the process. The material is suitable as a technical construction plastic.
