Abstract

The use of a washing press (13) reduces the total amounts of alkaline material used in the process, compared to processes which supply alkaline material to the pulp at low consistency. Additional alkali (20) can be added, if desired, to the high consistency mass (15) prior to oxygen delignification (21), giving a total amount of between 0.8 and 7 pulp & oven dried pulp. Pulp (23) is formed with high strength and low lignin content after oxygen leaching, which can then be bleached to high brightness with reduced amounts of bleaching chemicals.
