Abstract

The capillaries (26) extend through one or more rows of projections (28) constituting the lower portion of the carrier (18). They are completely filled by capillary action and the inoculum is held therein by adhesion and surface tension. A test device may be used in conjunction with the capillary inoculator (12) and comprises discrete test points (64) aligned with the ends of the respective projections (28). Each of the test points (64) may contain an absorbent material such as a cellulose plate. A dry reagent can be deposited on each plate so that the inoculum can be analyzed by test equipment or by visual observation. There is also provided a method which includes the steps of filling the capillaries (26), aligning the capillaries (26) with the test points (64) in the test device and depositing the liquid graft at the respective test points (64) by waking or other procedures. There is also disclosed a method for producing a plurality of discrete liquid samples with small accurate volumes from a plurality of liquids which may have an indefinite volume.
