Disse katodeelementer er sammen-satt av to deler som er stivt sammenføyet og varmesjokk-bestandige.Den øvre del (12) som fra smelteelektrolytten (30) rager ned i det utskilte aluminium (26), eller dens overflatebelegg består av et material som ved driftstemperatur er en god elektrisk leder og kjemisk bestandig samt kan fuktes av aluminium.Den nedre del (14,16) som i sin helhet befinner seg i flytende aluminium (26), eller dens overflatebelegg består imidlertid av et isolerende material som er bestandig over-for flytende aluminium.
