Description

HOLDING DEVICE AND METHOD FOR A PIPE GRIPPING ASSEMBLY
Technical field
[0001] The present invention relates generally to a holding device for a pipe gripping assembly wherein the holding device is adapted to host a pipe contacting element. In a griping assembly multiple holding devices are arranged to grip a pipe and rotate it into or out of threaded engagement with another pipe.
Background art
[0002] In prior art there are multiple problems with gripping assemblies used for rotating pipes in or out of threaded engagements. For example, most gripping assemblies requires large force to succeed in rotating the pipe. Using large force creates multiple problems and increase the risk for damage to the pipes, especially relating to the so-called egg effect wherein the pipe risks to adapt the form of an egg due to pressure from the gripping assembly.
[0003] Another common problem is that most gripping solution risk to damage the threaded sections of the pipes if force is applied on the pipe at a location of the threaded section. Yet another problem in the prior art is that gripping assemblies tends to leave marks in the pipes from the jaws of the pipe contacting element.
Summary of invention
[0004] An object of the present invention is to address at least some of the drawbacks of the prior art. Thus, an object of the present solution is to provide a gripping assembly comprising a holding device that don’t leave any marks in the pipe that is threaded into, or out of, engagement with another pipe.
[0005] Another object of the present solution is to provide a holding device for a gripping arrangement that would require less force to rotate the pipe, thus overcoming most of the drawbacks with the prior art.
[0006] Thus, the solution relates to a holding device for a pipe gripping assembly, wherein the holding device is adapted to host at least one pipe contacting element. The holding device comprises an elastic element and a locking device, wherein the locking device is adapted to lock said pipe contacting element into the holding device between the elastic element and said locking device.
[0007] It is one advantage with the present solution that the elastic element enables that the pipe contacting element can move in a vertical direction, i.e. a direction along the extension direction of a pipe to be gripped, and thus reduces or eliminates the marks left in the pipe. When the pipe is threaded into and out of engagement with another pipe there is movement due to the pitch of the thread. The movement has to be compensated for, either by allowing the pipe to slide within the engagement with the pipe contacting element or through allowing the pipe contacting element to move.
[0008] It is another advantage with the present solution that the elasticity of the elastic element allows for a controlled movement of the pipe contacting element, further reducing the risk for leaving marks in the pipe or damaging the pipe.
[0009] In one embodiment the elastic element is made of any one of rubber and synthetic rubber.
[0010] In one embodiment the elastic element is an element that deforms elastic.
[0011] In one embodiment the elastic element is an element that allows for movement wherein the elastic element deforms elastic during rotation of the pipe and returns to its original form after rotation.
[0012] In one embodiment further describing details of the holding device for the pipe gripping assembly, the holding device is adapted to host at least one pipe contacting element in a space. The holding device comprises an elastic element and a locking device, wherein the locking device is adapted to retain said pipe contacting element between the elastic element and said locking device in the space of the holding device.
[0013] In the art is it common to refer to the holding device for the pipe gripping assemblies as a jaw and the pipe contacting element is typically called a dice. The invention as described herein is however not limited to the traditional form of a dice or jaw, the solution is for example usable with other iterations of pipe gripping assemblies.
[0014] In one embodiment of the holding device space is confined by the locking device, the elastic element, and two edges. The space is in one embodiment further confined by a back surface.
[0015] In one embodiment of the holding device the two edges have a shape adapted to receive the pipe contacting element and restrict the movement of the pipe contacting element in a first and second direction. The two edges further restrict the movement of the pipe contacting element in a third direction, the third direction being perpendicular to said first and second directions.
[0016] In one embodiment the two edges each comprises a surface arranged to restrict movement of the pipe contacting element in a direction perpendicular to the extension direction of the pipe to be gripped.
[0017] In one embodiment the two edges have a shape making the space a shallow frusto-cone, i.e. the space is wider closer to the center of the holding device than to the edge. This enables that the pipe contacting element can be held in place. The pipe contacting element has a mirrored corresponding shape.
[0018] In other embodiment the shape of the edges is rounded, have square indentations, or any other form that allows for the movement of the pipe contacting element to be restricted such that the pipe contacting element is kept in position of the space.
[0019] In one embodiment of the holding device the first and second direction are directions that are perpendicular to the extension direction of a pipe to be gripped. The extension direction of a pipe to be gripped is the same direction as a longitudinal direction of the pipe.
[0020] In one embodiment of the holding device, the elastic element is arranged in an aperture going through the holding device.
[0021] In one embodiment the elastic element has one larger section and one smaller section, wherein the smaller section is adapted to extend into the space and the larger section is adapted to retain the elastic element between the holding device and a surface the holding device is mounted to.
[0022] In one embodiment of the elastic element and the locking device are arranged to abut the pipe contacting element at opposite sides of a longitudinal direction of the pipe contacting element.
[0023] In one embodiment of the holding device the elastic element has an elasticity allowing movement of the pipe contacting element corresponding to the pitch of a threaded section of a pipe adapted to be rotated between 20 and 45 degrees by a pipe gripping assembly.
[0024] In one embodiment of the holding device the elastic element has a diameter between 2 and 10 mm.
[0025] In one embodiment of the holding device the pipe contacting element comprises multiple jaws for enhanced grip to a pipe.
[0026] In one embodiment the holding device is arranged in a pipe gripping assembly comprising at least two holding devices fastened each to a gripping body.
[0027] According to one aspect the holding device is arranged in a pipe gripping assembly for connecting pipes into threaded engagement in a drill string, and the following steps are performed:
- gripping a first pipe with pipe contacting elements of at least a first and a second holding device,
- gripping a second pipe with pipe contacting elements of at least a third and fourth holding device,
- rotating said first and second holding device in relation to said third and fourth holding device connecting said first and second pipe into threaded engagement, and
- during rotation compressing the elastic element minimizing the movement between the pipe and pipe contacting elements being in engagement.
