Abstract

The appts. to coat a moving paper or cardboard web has a roller spreader as the first coating stage, fitted with fine peripheral grooves packed closely together to give a low volume layer as a dose as the mantle surface of the first roller (1) guiding the web. The applied mass is compressed in the gap between the first roller (1) and a counter roller (2) so that a thin layer of the coating mass remains, particularly the solid pigment portion. The solid content of the coating mass for the first applied coating is a max. of 70%. The pref. solid content of the coating mass in the first stage is 50-60%, and the coating is applied at a rate of 6-40 ml/m2, especially 12-22 ml/m2. A further roller blade, with peripheral grooves, applies a second coating where the web passes round a second guide roller (3) using a coating mass with a solid content of max. 70% and at least an absolute 10% higher than in the first coating mass as a pref. 60-70%. Designed for coating cardboard web, a doctor blade can be used instead of a roller applicator, or a suitable bar.

Description

The invention relates to a method and device for coating continuous goods lanes of paper or cardboard, as stated in the introduction to claim 1 and claim 7 respectively.

A method for coating continuous goods webs with two consecutive coatings while the first layer is still moist when the second layer is applied is known from US-PS 3,202,536. The two coating stations are there arranged by a single roller leading the webs as well as by two rollers following each other. An air brush is used as the final smoothing element. An application device of a similar type, with a roller that guides the web in a coating device, is also known from CA-PS 882 640. In that case, the layer is applied by means of an application roller and scraped off by means of a coating knife. It is ensured that a mass is used which is a mixture of kaolin-containing mass as well as starch, protein or thermoplastic synthetic resin.

In US-PS 3,202,536 it is ensured that the first application layer has a relatively high consistency, i.e. a solids content of more than 55$, and that the second layer has a substantially lower consistency with a lower solids content of a maximum of 45 $, as the main proportion in both cases is kaolin.

The use of an air brush today presents problems as a result of the high web speeds used during application. In practice, the air brush can only be used up to speeds of 500 m/min. In today's strong competition, this is a rather significant disadvantage, despite the fact that the air brush has the great advantage that, despite a relatively sparse application, a blemish-free coating can be achieved with it.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a device as well as a method, with which a blemish-free application can also be achieved. This applies in particular in connection with cardboard, where the surface of the raw cardboard has a relatively large roughness, so that when other coating methods are used, where for example a coating knife is used as an equalizing element, there will be uncovered places on the protruding "tops". According to the invention, during the first coating, the application mass is imprinted on the product web from the surface of the first web guide roller while utilizing the pressure in the pressure gap formed between two interacting rollers. This results in a short-term deformation of the paper tap. The amount applied or transferred is relatively small, but so that it is ensured that solid particles from the coating mass are also deposited on the "peaks" in the micro-roughness. The press pressure and the hydraulic pressure in the press gap cause a certain dewatering of the coating mass in the first layer, but a moisture content is retained in the coating mass. This "pre-watering" in the press gap ensures adhesion of coating compound also on the "tops" of the track. Some intermediate drying before applying the second layer is possible.

The invention thus relates to a method as mentioned at the beginning of patent claim 1, with the characteristics stated in patent claim 1. The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method, with the characteristics that appear from the characteristic in claim 7.

Further features of the method and the device, respectively, are specified in the non-independent patent claims.

For the coating of cardboard, it has proven appropriate to only dose the second application layer using the grooves of a roller knife provided with peripheral grooves, without this layer being affected by a further smoothing element. With a corresponding setting of the consistency of the coating compound, a sufficient flow is achieved, so that further smoothing, associated with possible disadvantages of a wipe, becomes redundant.

The invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to the drawings.

I fig. In fig. 1, it is assumed that the product web passes through a pressure gap formed between two rollers 1 and 2. The one roller, which has a rubberized surface, is assigned to an application unit which includes a nozzle chamber 6, a circumferentially grooved roller knife 7 and a holder 8 for the knife. The hardness of the rubber coating on the roller 1 can be between 0 and 200, preferably 10 and 70 "P and J". "P and J" stands for "Pusey and Jones" and is a hardness designation based on a special measurement method (the indentation depth of a constantly loaded steel ball in a rubber surface). The application rate for cardboard should be 6 to 40 ml/m2, preferably 12 to 22 ml/m2. The second layer is applied in a similar device, with a roller knife 11, holder 12 and nozzle chamber 9. However, it may also be appropriate to use a coating knife or a smooth roller knife in place 10 as an equalizing element.

The relevant consistencies, i.e. solids content, are for the first application layer between 50 and b0% maximum and for the second application layer between 60 and 70% maximum. It is considered advantageous to use an application unit with a nozzle chamber 6,9, where there is a roller knife 7,11 with a holder 8,12 at the exit end near the surface to be coated. You thus have the advantage here compared to the airbrush method, that you can work with a relatively high consistency overall, and especially in the second application layer. The line pressures in the press gap between the first two rollers 1 and 2 are between 5 and 60 kgN/m, preferably 20-40 kgN/m.

Anordningen i fig. The device in fig. 2 has overall only two web guiding rollers 21 and 22, and each of these is assigned to an application device of the type described. Such an arrangement is possible for cardboard, because cardboard stretches less than paper when moistened in the coating plant.

For cardboard, it would be a favorable option as a dosing element to use a roller knife 11 provided with circumferential grooves with a holder 12 at the outlet end of the nozzle chamber 9 for the second coating (final dosing), and then not to use an additional smoothing element. This is shown in fig. 3. In this way, a very good coating application can be achieved with relatively little consumption of coating compound.

I fig. In fig. 4 shows how a transfer roller 17 can also be used for the coating compound for the second coating device. A scraping is then carried out using one of the known dosing elements.

In a certain area of application, glue application for paper, you can dose the first application layer with a coating knife instead of with the grooves of a roller knife, but you then have to monitor the work of the coating knife very precisely.
