Abstract

The invention relates to a contactless identification card or smart card, which is provided with at least two electronic chips. The first of these chips comprises the programming for the basic application of the card concerned. Furthermore, a switch is incorporated in this chip, with the aid of which the I/O contact can be connected on the card in accordance with ISO 7816 to the internal I/O line of this basic chip. By means of an instruction from the card reader, this switch can be changed over. With this mode of operation, the I/O line of the second chip can be connected to the I/O contact in accordance with ISO 7816 and the card reader can communicate with the application for which the programming in the second chip is provided.

Description

Chip card with more than one chip and combined I / O line.

The invention relates to an identification card or smart card, for example with contacts according to the international ISO standard ISO-7816, or in a contactless version according to the standard ISO-10536. In the conventional embodiments, such a card contains an electronic circuit in the form of a chip which can communicate with a card reader via the contacts or contactlessly.

It is also possible to make a combination of the contacts and the contactless functionality, as described in applicant's Dutch patent application number 9101608.

The application of these chip cards is determined by the programming that has been made in the electronic circuits and is therefore fixed per card.

However, there is an increasing need in the market to combine different applications, also known as applications, or to apply these combinations at a later stage.

The present invention aims to provide a solution to this and will be described below with reference to a schematic block diagram.

Figure 1 shows a block diagram of the chip card according to the invention.

Chip (1) contains an electronic circuit, which can communicate with a card reader via contacts according to ISO-7816.

The power lines (4) (5), a clock signal (7), a reset signal (6) and an input / output signal (1/0 signal) (8) are connected to the chip via the contacts.

In addition to these contacts, a contactless connection via a coil and possibly a capacitive coupling in accordance with ISO-10536 with the basic vessel (1) may also be provided.

In order to be able to use this card for another application, it is possible to expand the memory of the chip (1) and to install the necessary programming for this application in the chip (1).

In the card according to the invention, however, the chip (1) is provided with an electronic switch (2), which can be operated by the card reader via an appropriate instruction.

A second chip (3) is also built into the card according to the invention for a second application, which are also connected to the supply lines (4) (5), the reset signal (6) and the clock (7) via the contacts, but whose I / O line is connected to switch (2) of chip (1). This connection is made in such a way that the switch (2) connects the I / O signal (8) either to the base chip (1) or to the I / O line of the switch connected via the switch (2). chip (3), intended for the second application.

In this way, multiple applications can be accommodated in one card in a simple manner and without the programming of different applications having to be combined in one chip.

It is of course also possible to arrange several switches (2) in the basic ship (1) together with multiple chips for other applications.

The switch (2) can, for example, take the form of one or more transistor (s).
