Abstract

The potential difference between a reference electrode and the surface of the object to be protected in a cathodic protection system is automatically measured by means of a system which incorporates time switches for switching out the cathode current thereby eliminating the electrolyte voltage drop error at the time of the measurement. The system consists of an amplifier for amplifying the voltage at the reference electrode, a timing device for switching off the feed rectifier for short periods whilst leaving it switched in for long periods, a memory which stores the "out" voltage measured during the switched out period, a selector circuit for comparing the incoming voltage signal from several reference electrodes and selecting the lowest value which is then used for automatic regulation and a differential amplifier which compares the selected measured value with a reference voltage and gives no signal if the measured value is equal to or greater than the reference value. The system enables the cathodic protection system to be automatically regulated on the basis of a potential difference measured when no current is flowing eliminating the IR error. Since the measurement is carried out almost instantly the current is switched out, the error due to depolarisation is also avoided.
