Abstract

Hydroxylamine salt solutions contg. a noble metal catalyst are stabilised by treating the catalyst in the soln. with an opt. substd. is not >12C unsatd. hydrocarbon. Pref. hydrocarbons are ethylene, propylene, butenes, butadiene and acetylene. The process is esp. useful during the prodn. of hydroxylamine by reduction of nitrogen monoxide or nitrate ions with H2 using a noble metal catalyst, e.g. a Pt and/or Pd contg. catalyst. Treatment of the noble metal catalyst with the unsatd. hydrocarbon limits the decomposition of the hydroxylamine, thus reducing the loss of hydroxylamine and preventing the formation of explosive gas mixts. of N2O (opt. in combination with H2 and/or hydrocarbons present as impurities in the H2).
