Abstract

Epichlorhydrin (I) is made by epoxidation of a stoichiometric excess of allyl chloride (II) with peracetic acid (III) using evaporative cooling. (III) is used as soln. which is free from catalytically active metal ions and the reaction is in >=1 reactor whose walls do not provide catalytically active metal ions. Pref. =10 (4-6) times the stoichiometric amt. of (II) is used. The excess (II) may be used as the evaporative cooling agent. The process is simple and economic. Excess (II) gives rapid epoxidation. Decomposition of (III) is reduced and oligomerisation and polymerisation of the (II) is reduced, so that selectivity to the prodn. of (I) is increased.
