Abstract
The unit is particularly for use as an artificial kidney, having a bundle of tubular selectively permeable membranes connected in parallel in a housing and supported at the ends. These divide the interior of the housing into two chambers, inside and outside them, each with feed and discharge ports for first and second commodities, exchange between which takes place via the membranes. At the ends of the bundle the housing has annular chambers connected to the feed and discharge ports of the outer chamber. The inner wall of the annular chamber has a number of passages spaced round the periphery, by which it is connected to the outer chamber. These passages can extend part of the way into the supports, and the housing can have a middle section with wider end sections joining onto it, forming the outer walls of the annular chambers.
