Abstract

A process for removing SO2 from flue gases contg. 5 wt. % SO2, in which the SO2 is removed by adsorption, the SO2-charged adsorbent or absorbent is regenerated by stripping with a gas, and the resulting off-gas (contg. >5 wt.% SO2 and practically no O2) is reacted with a reducing gas and processed in a Claus unit to produce elementary S, is improved in that the reducing gas comprises a gas contg. H2S, COS and/or CS2 produced from the S obtd. from the Claus unit by thermal and/or catalytic reaction with H2, CO and/or hydrocarbons. Since the reducing gas contains S cpds., dilution of the total S content of the gas entering the Claus unit is avoided, so the efficiency of the unit is increased.
