Abstract

The mechanism is of the type having a welding torch (4), which carries and controls the movement of a non-fusable electrode (5), and means to supply an inert gas to the welding region (7) from a gas beaker which envelops the electrode in the torch. A long gas screen is provided which extends from the beaker over a long distance. This screen on its own, or in combination with the preparation for the weld in the from of a narrow gap (1), contains the electrode except for its tip over the length by which the electrode projects from the beaker.
