Cpds are of formula (I) (where R1 is 1-3C alkyl; R2 is O or (alpha-Q); P is H or 1-4C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; Q is free, esterified or etherified OH; R3 is H or Me; R4 is F, Cl or Br) and are prepd. by reacting the corresp. 11 alpha-hydroxy cpd., in which the keto gps. are opt. protected, with a halogenating agent, pref. of formula (II). R5R6N-CR7R8-CR9R10R11 (where R5 and R6 are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, or NR5R6 is a heterocycle; R7 and R10 are halogen; R8 is F, Cl or Br and R9 is H, or R8 + R9 form a C-C bond; R11 is F, Cl, Br or CF3). Cpds. (I) have a wide range of hormonal activities.
