Abstract
Isobutene contained in C4 hydrocarbon fractions from which butadiene has been removed, is oligomerised by contacting the gaseous C4 mixture at 100-300 degrees C (esp. 160-190 degrees C) with a catalyst consisting of SnO2 and MoO3 on an inert carrier such as silica. The process is an economical method of recovering isobutene from C4 hydrocarbon fractions obtained e.g. by catalytic cracking and isomerisation of oil fractions. The oligomers produced can be recovered by distillation and there is little tendency for codimerisation of isobutene with n-butenes present.
