Description
Jigsaw puzzle; puzzle piece for such a jigsaw puzzle; booklet comprising such a puzzle piece and method for manufacturing such a booklet
The invention relates to a jigsaw puzzle; to a puzzle piece for such a jigsaw puzzle; to a booklet comprising such a puzzle piece and to a method for manufacturing such a booklet.
In 2009 the Dutch grocery chain of Albert Heyn provided an incentive to its customers in the form of a series of 24 small booklets, wherein each booklet comprised several puzzle pieces for a jigsaw puzzle. These puzzle pieces could be assembled with puzzle pieces from other similar booklets of the series to make a complete jigsaw puzzle exhibiting renowned soccer players. The puzzle pieces could simply be pressed out of the back cover of the booklet after opening its front cover which was for this purpose manufactured with a tear line.
The invention is aimed at further developing and refining the prior art jigsaw puzzle, puzzle piece, booklet and method for its manufacturing. Accordingly these items are now embodied with the features of one or more of the appended claims .
According to the invention a jigsaw puzzle is proposed comprising a multitude of jigsaw puzzle pieces, wherein all puzzle pieces are defined to fit in a predefined framework of the jigsaw puzzle, and wherein all puzzle pieces have a predefined circumferential shape. Preferably all puzzle pieces have the same predefined circumferential shape. The essence of the promotional article provided hereby does therefore not relate to the common challenge of putting a jigsaw puzzle together, but to other aspects - to be discussed furtheron - that come within reach after the puzzle pieces are assembled together to form the completed jigsaw puzzle .
According to another aspect of the invention the jigsaw puzzle is comprised of puzzle pieces wherein each puz zle piece is an element of a predefined group, said group being defined by a pre-shaped diecut channel in such puzzle piece. The diecut channel can be used as a guiding channel for a toy, such as a car which can be manipulated by a child along the track formed by the said guiding channel. The jigsaw puzzle when completed may for instance provide the image of a food chain, wherein the guiding channel leads the child along each separate step that the food has to undertake in the food chain before it eventually arrives at the child's plate .
Preferably the pre-shaped diecut channel in each puzzle piece extends at each of its both ends in separate middle regions of the circumference of the concerning puzzle piece. In this way any pre-shaped diecut channel provided in one puzzle piece is always in line with another pre-shaped diecut channel that is provided in another puzzle piece with which the first puzzle piece is assembled.
It is preferable that the concerning puzzle pieces that are provided with a pre-shaped diecut channel each have this channel in its upper surface.
According to the above the invention is not only embodied in the jigsaw puzzle as such but the invention is also embodied in the separate puzzle pieces, wherein the preshaped diecut channel extends from a first middle region of the puzzle piece's circumference to a second middle region of the puzzle piece's circumference.
According to yet another aspect of the invention a booklet is proposed comprising at least one puzzle piece for a jigsaw puzzle, which booklet comprises a back cover and a front cover, and wherein the at least one puzzle piece is comprised within a framework of the booklet and is delineated therefrom by a continuous score line. According to the invention this booklet comprises a single puzzle piece that has a pre-shaped diecut channel in its upper surface.
In one embodiment of the booklet of the invention, the booklet including its puzzle piece forms a single unitary piece of paper or carton. This promotes the ease of production of the booklet of the invention and limits costs.
Beneficially the booklet of the invention is embodied with the feature that it's puzzle piece has an upper part and a lower part, wherein the upper part of the puzzle piece is sandwiched between a back cover and a front cover of the booklet. In this manner the puzzle piece can remain completely out of side upon receipt of the booklet, particularly when the front cover is at opposite sides thereof attached to the remainder of the booklet. It is in this embodiment preferable that the back cover of the booklet comprises the lower part of the puzzle piece.
Finally the invention relates to a method for manufacturing a booklet comprising at least one puzzle piece for a jigsaw puzzle, wherein a paper or carton piano is provided with a foldline or foldlines and at least one score line to define the at least one puzzle piece in the piano. According to the method of manufacturing according to the invention, the piano is provided with score lines to delimit removable material from the puzzle piece, such that after removal of said removable material the puzzle piece exhibits a preshaped channel in its upper surface. This pre-shaped channel then forms the guide channel for other playing material such as a toy car of a playing child.
To promote efficiency of manufacturing it is preferable that the foldline or foldlines delimit piano parts of essentially the same size which are bendable around the foldline of foldlines to complete the booklet, including its back cover and front cover.
In one advantageous embodiment of the method of the invention the feature is applied that prior to providing the piano with score lines it is printed on both sides. It is however also possible to separately provide printed paper which is thereafter glued on the piano.
Preferably the piano is folded with an upper part of the puzzle piece between two fold lines such that after folding said upper part of the puzzle piece is sandwiched between the back cover and the front cover of the booklet.
In one preferable embodiment the back cover of the booklet is provided with a score line that exactly matches a score line provided in the piano for defining the upper part of the puzzle piece, such that after folding the piano to complete the booklet, the score line in the back cover and the score line defining the upper part of the puzzle piece overlie each other. A sturdy puzzle piece can be provided by arranging that the back cover of the booklet (comprising the lower part of the puzzle piece) and the upper part of the puzzle piece are glued to each other.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention, after folding the piano the front cover is on two opposite sides fixed to the remainder of the booklet, wherein said front cover is provided with a tear line to enable opening of the front cover.
Although the invention can be readily understood by the skilled person taking note of the foregoing description, the invention will hereinafter be further explained with reference to an exemplary embodiment of elements of the invention shown in the attached drawing, which elements are not limiting as to the appended claims.
In the drawing: -figure 1 shows a piano prior to its formation into a booklet according to the invention; -figure 2 shows the folding over of the separate piano parts to form the booklet of the invention; and -figure 3A and figure 3B respectively show the closed completed booklet of the invention, and the booklet being opened after breaking its closure means.
Whenever in the figures the same reference numerals are applied, these numerals refer to the same parts.
With reference first to figure 1 a plano 1 is depicted that forms a single unitary piece of paper or carton, comprising in this example three parts IA, IB, and 1C of essentially the same size.
From this plano 1 a booklet 15 is manufactured (which is seen in figures 3A and 3B in closed and opened form respectively) comprising at least one puzzle piece 2 for a jigsaw puzzle. The booklet 15 comprises a back cover 3 and a front cover 4, and the puzzle piece 2 is comprised within a framework 5 of the booklet and delineated therefrom by a continuous score line 6.
As figure 1 clearly shows the plano 1 for the booklet, and in particular its part IB comprises a single puzzle piece 2. According to the invention this single puzzle piece 2 is provided with at least one pre-shaped diecut channel 7, 8 in its upper surface.
Figure 1 further shows that each of the pre-shaped diecut channels 7, 8 extends from a first middle region 9 (or 11) of the puzzle piece's circumference to a second middle region 10 (or 12) of the puzzle piece's circumference.
It can also be inferred from the preferred embodiment of figure 1 that the plano 1 to form the booklet of the invention provides the puzzle piece 2 with an upper part 2' (embedded in the middle part IB of the piano 1) and a lower part 2'' (embedded in the right-hand part 1C of the plano 1), wherein eventually the upper part 2' of the puzzle piece 2 becomes sandwiched between a back cover 3 (formed by the right-hand portion 1C of the Plano 1) and a front cover 4 of the booklet (formed by the left-hand portion 1A of the piano 1). Accordingly the back cover 3 of the booklet comprises the lower part 2'' of the puzzle piece 2 which is delimited by a score line 16 from the remainder of the back cover 3.
Figure 1 shows that in one of the steps of the method for manufacturing a booklet according to the invention, the paper or carton plano 1 is provided with a foldline or foldlines 13, 14 and also at least one score line 6 to define the at least one puzzle piece 2 in the piano 1.
Figure 1 further shows that the plano 1 is provided with score lines 7', 7'' and 8', 8'' to delimit removable ma terial from the puzzle piece 2, such that after removal of said removable material the puzzle piece 2 exhibits a preshaped channel or channels 7, 8 in its upper surface.
As mentioned the foldline or foldlines 13, 14 de limit piano parts IA, IB and 1C of essentially the same size which are bendable around the foldline of foldlines 13, 14 to complete the booklet 15 as shown in figure 3A, including its back cover 3 and front cover 4. Beneficially prior to providing the plano 1 with the fold lines 13, 14 and the score lines 1', 1'' and 8', 8rr it is printed on both sides.
Figure 2 illustrates an exemplary embodiment of the invention in which the plano 1 is folded with the upper part 2' of the puzzle piece 2 between two fold lines 13, 14 such that after folding said upper part 2' of the puzzle piece 2 is sandwiched between the back cover 3 and the front cover 4 of the booklet 15.
As is shown in figure 1 at the part that is intended to form the back cover 3 of the booklet, the plano 1 is provided with a score line 16 that exactly matches a score line 6 provided in the plano 1 for defining the upper part 2' of the puzzle piece 2. This is done such that after folding the plano 1 to complete the booklet 15 (which is shown in figure 3A), the score line 16 in the back cover 3 and the score line 6 defining the upper part 2' of the puzzle piece 2 overlie each other. In this overlying position the back cover 3 of the booklet and the upper part 2' of the puzzle piece 2 are glued to each other.
When the booklet 15 is completed after folding the plano 1, which is shown in figure 3A, the front cover 4 is on two opposite sides 17, 18 fixed to the remainder of the book let 15, whereby preferably said front cover 4 is provided with a tear line 19 to enable opening of the front cover. Figure 3B shows that after tearing the tear line 19 the front cover 4 maybe lifted from the remainder of the booklet 15.
The single puzzle piece 2 comprised in the booklet 15 represents an example of all puzzle pieces 2 which are defined to fit in a predefined framework, wherein all puzzle pieces 2 have the same predefined circumferential shape. It is preferred that each puzzle piece 2 is an element of a predefined group, said group being defined by the above explained pre-shaped diecut channel 7, 8 in such puzzle piece 2. As mentioned the pre-shaped diecut channel 7, 8 in each puzzle piece extends at each of its both ends in separate middle regions 9, 11 and 10, 12 of the circumference of the concerning puzzle piece 2. The diecut channels 7, 8 in adja cent puzzle pieces 2 thus form a guide channel for a playing toy, guiding along images of a completed jigsaw puzzle which images may have an educational purpose.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of elements of the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the gist of the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
