Description

Title: Cornea trephine device
The invention relates to a cornea trephine device, more particularly to a cornea trephine device including a cutting blade mounted rotatably on an annular depth-cutting blade.
Fig. 1 illustrates a conventional cornea trephine device 1 that includes a cylindrical support 11, a cylindrical cutting member 12, and a plurality of pads 13 provided on a bottom peripheral end of the cylindrical support 11. The cylindrical support 11 has an inner surface 112 formed with an inner thread 111, and defines an accommodating space 113 therein. The cylindrical cutting member 12 extends into the accommodating space 113 and has an outer thread 122 that engages threadedly the inner thread 111, and an annular depth-cutting blade 121. In operation, the cylindrical cutting member 12 is rotated relative to the cylindrical support 11 until the depth-cutting blade 121 is disposed outwardly of the accommodating space 113, followed by placing the pads 13 on a cornea 100 of an eye and then cutting the cornea 100 using the depth-cutting blade 121 to form a circular incision with a depth (H). The circular incision surrounds a tissue-removing region 101 on the cornea 100 that is to be removed. After formation of the circular incision, the tissue-removing region 101 of the cornea 100 is removed from the cornea 100 by cutting laterally using another device, such as scissors (not shown). However, changing to another device is inconvenient.
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a cornea trephine device that can overcome the aforesaid drawback associated with the prior art.
According to this invention, there is provided a cornea trephine device that comprises: a blade-mounting seat; a cylindrical cutting mechanism mounted on the blade-mounting seat and movable relative to the blade-mounting seat along a central axis, the cylindrical cutting mechanism having an annular depth-cutting blade, the depth-cutting blade having an inner surface that defines a lower chamber, and being formed with an inner groove indented from the inner surface; and a tissue-removing mechanism mounted rotatably on the cylindrical cutting mechanism and having a cutting blade that is disposed at the depth-cutting blade. The cutting blade is rotatable in the lower chamber relative to the depth-cutting blade about an axis parallel to the central axis. The cutting blade is received in and extends curvedly along the inner groove when the cutting blade is disposed at a first angular position, and extends out of the inner groove and into the lower chamber when the cutting blade is moved from the first angular position to a second angular position.

Before the present invention is described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying preferred embodiments, it should be noted herein that like elements are denoted by the same reference numerals throughout the disclosure.
Figs. 2 to 6 illustrate the first preferred embodiment of a cornea trephine device 2 according to the present invention. The cornea trephine device 2 includes a blade-mounting seat 21, a cylindrical cutting mechanism 22 and a tissue-removing mechanism 24.
In this embodiment, the blade-mounting seat 21 is hollow and has first and second ends 211, 212 and a cylindrical inner surface 210 that defines an accommodating space 213 and that is formed with an inner thread 214. The accommodating space 213 extends through the first and second ends 211, 212 of the blade-mounting seat 21.
The cylindrical cutting mechanism 22 has a cylindrical wall 221 and an annular depth-cutting blade 223. The cylindrical wall 221 is mounted to the blade-mounting seat 21, extends into the accommodating space 213, is movable relative to the blade-mounting seat 21 along a central axis (X), and has a top end 2211, an inner surface 2212 that defines an upper chamber 2210, and an outer surface 2213 that is formed with an outer thread 225 engaging threadedly the inner thread 214.
The depth-cutting blade 223 is tapered from the cylindrical wall 221 to point toward a direction parallel to the central axis (X), has an inner surface 2231 that defines a lower chamber 2230, and is formed with an annular inner groove 2233 indented from the inner surface 2231 and extending circumferentially relative to the central axis (X).
The cylindrical cutting mechanism 22 is movable relative to the blade-mounting seat 21 along the central axis (X) between a first position (see Fig. 3), in which the depth-cutting blade 223 is disposed in the accommodating space 213, and a second position (see Fig. 4), in which the depth-cutting blade 223 is disposed outwardly of the accommodating space 213.
The tissue-removing mechanism 24 is mounted rotatably on the cylindrical cutting mechanism 22, and has first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b rotatable relative to the depth-cutting blade 223, and first and second pivot shafts 241a, 241b connected to the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b, respectively.
The first cutting blade 244a points toward a transverse direction transverse to the central axis (X), is disposed at the depth-cutting blade 223, and is rotatable in the lower chamber 2230 relative to the depth-cutting blade 223 about a first axis (LI) of the first pivot shaft 241a. The first axis (LI) is parallel to the central axis (X). The second cutting blade 244b points toward the transverse direction, is disposed at the depth-cutting blade 223 opposite to the first cutting blade 244a, and is rotatable in the lower chamber 2230 relative to the depth-cutting blade 223 about a second axis (L2) of the second pivot shaft 241b. The second axis (L2) is parallel to the central axis (X).
In this embodiment, the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b are received in and extend curvedly along the inner groove 2233 when the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b are disposed respectively at first and third angular positions (see Fig. 5), and extend out of the inner groove 2233 and into the lower chamber 2230 when the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b are moved from the first and third angular positions to second and fourth angular positions (see Fig. 6), respectively. Free ends of the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b meet each other at the central axis (X) when the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b are disposed respectively at the second and fourth angular positions.
The depth-cutting blade 223 and the cylindrical wall 221 are formed as a single piece. The single piece is formed with first and second pivot channels 226a, 226b that are diametrically disposed and that extend from the top end 2211 of the cylindrical wall 221 to the inner groove 2233 in a direction parallel to the central axis (X). The first and second pivot shafts 241a, 241b extend into and along the first and second pivot channels 226a, 226b to the inner groove 2233 to connect with the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b, respectively, for driving rotation of the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b relative to the depth-cutting blade 223.
Referring to Fig. 7, in combination with Figs. 2,3 and 6, in operation, the cornea trephine device 2 is placed on a cornea 200 of an eye, followed by vertically cutting the cornea 200 using the depth-cutting blade 223 to form a circular incision on the cornea 200 that surrounds a tissue-removing region 201 of the cornea 200 to be removed, and then by transversely cutting the tissue-removing region 201 in the transverse direction using the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b by rotation of the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b about the first and second axes (LI, L2), respectively. Since the transverse cutting by the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b cannot at one time cut through an entire area of the tissue-removing region 201, repeated operations of rotating the cornea trephine device 2 relative to the cornea 200 by an angular angle and laterally cutting the tissue-removing region 201 using the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b are performed in order to cut through the entire area of the tissue-removing region 201.
Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate the second preferred embodiment of the cornea trephine device 2 according to the present invention. The cornea trephine device 2 of the second preferred embodiment differs from the previous embodiment in the structures of the blade-mounting seat 21 and the cylindrical cutting mechanism 22. In this embodiment, the blademounting seat 21 is solid, extends into a space defined by the cylindrical wall 221, and is formed with an outer thread 215, and the cylindrical wall 221 is formed with an inner thread 226 that engages threadedly the outer thread 215. The cylindrical cutting mechanism 22 is movable relative to the blade-mounting seat 21 between a first position (Fig. 8), in which the bottom end 212 of the blade-mounting seat 21 is disposed outwardly of the lower chamber 2230, and a second position (see Fig. 9), in which the bottom end 212 of the blade-mounting seat 21 is disposed in the lower chamber 2230 above the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b.
With the inclusion of the first and second cutting blades 244a, 244b and the first and second pivot shafts 241a, 241b in the cornea trephine device 2 of the present invention, the aforesaid drawback associated with the prior art can be eliminated.
