The invention relates to a system for distributing PIN codes for an identification or payment means or the like, in which personal data and associated PIN codes are recorded in a central computer.
The issuing of PIN codes by service companies, such as banks, petrol stations, credit card issuers and the like, hereinafter referred to as service providers, has been taking place for several decades. Such PINs usually only consist of 4 or 5 digits, because remembering the PIN is a problem for many numbers or numbers. Because many people use different service providers that issue identification or payment means with a PIN code, many people have several PIN codes linked to different such means, which makes it difficult to remember those different PIN codes. Until now, it is not possible to let every user freely choose their own PIN code, for example 4 digits, because that PIN code in combination with, for example, an associated bank account number at another bank or institution in combination with the account number of the person concerned may yield a control code that already belongs to another person in the system of that bank 25 or institution. Due to this problem, the linking of bank security systems and other institutions, whereby users are given the option of using the same PIN code for all institutions, is not possible.
The object of the invention is to provide a system of the above-mentioned type, in which this problem is effectively overcome.
To this end, the system according to the invention has the feature 1008287 2, that an additional code is added to each PIN code, such that the PIN code and additional code together form a unique personal (PG) code for each person, whereby these PG code can be supplied to the 5 computer of a service provider, which is executed for checking the PIN code entered by an i, user.
By using a central computer, \ which by adding an additional code to a customary PIN code for each person a unique 'personal code is formed, anyone who wishes to do so can apply to any bank or institution that - “issues a means, a means of payment or the like, to which an I PIN code must be linked, request that institution 15 to assign its own PIN code to the means in question. The PIN code with the additional code is then stored in the computer of the institutions concerned, using this complete PG code to check the correctness of an entered PIN code.
Preferably, according to the invention, a unique provider code is added to each PG code in each computer of a service provider.
