Abstract

A rotary shredder for shredding waste material. The shredder comprises a casing (10) having an open top (11) for receiving material to be shredded; a pair of spaced apart counter-rotatable shafts (20); and a scrapper mechanism (SO). Each of the rotatable shafts are supported at both ends by bearing assemblies (80) having a combination of spherical and tapered roller bearings (81, 82) to prevent vertical and horizontal movement of the shafts, in use. Each of the rotatable shafts have an arrangement of alternating cutter and spacer discs (30, 40), the cutter and spacer discs being rotatable together with the respective shafts. The cutter discs on one shaft are arranged in an interleaving configuration with the discs on the other shaft and define a shredding nip therebetween. The scrapper mechanism is provided to prevent fouling of the cutter and spacer discs by shredded material and is provided at each side of the pair of rotatable shafts, and angularly offset from the horizontal axes of the shafts. The mechanism has a plurality of immovably mounted scrapper keys (55), each of the keys being arranged to extend radially into the space between the cutter discs of each shaft so as to enable stripping of shredded material therefrom.
