Abstract

Esta descrita una celda electrolitica de membrana que comprende un compartimiento anodico y un compartimiento catodico, en donde al menos uno de los dos compartimientos contiene un electrodo alimentado con gas y un elemento plano poroso esta interpuesto entre la membrana y el electrodo alimentado con gas. Un flujo de electrolito quimicamente agresivo atraviesa el elemento plano poroso descendiendo bajo el efecto de la fuerza de gravedad. El elemento plano consiste en un elemento plastico que sobrelleva las condiciones operativas agresivas: el uso de materias plasticas perfluoradas tales como ECTFE, PTEFE, FEP, PFA es preferido, aunque sean fuertemente hidrofobicas. Cuando el electrodo alimentado con gas es un catodo y el gas contiene oxigeno, el gas atraviesa el compartimiento catodico hacia lo alto para minimizar el riesgo de acumulacion de hidrogeno. La celda provista del catodo de oxigeno es particularmente ventajosa para la electrolisis de cloruro sodico.
