Abstract
The present invention is a sunscreen composition in the form of an aerosol that foams. The composition contains a sunscreen agent, an emulsifier, a foam builder/stabilizer, a counterion, and a propellant. In addition, the ratio of the foam builder/stabilizer to counterion is about 1:4 to about 5:1.2 to ensure the foam quality and integrity.
Description
SOLAR PROTECTIVE COMPOSITION IN AEROSOL
Background of the Invention I. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to sunscreens. More particularly, the present invention relates to sunscreen compositions prepared in the form of an aerosol product that foams.
II. Description of the Prior Art Sunscreen compositions are applied to the skin to protect the skin from the ultraviolet rays of the sun that can lead to erythema, a reddening of the skin also known as sunburn. Radiation of sunlight or ultraviolet in the UV-B range has a wavelength of 290nm to 320nm and is known to be the primary cause of sunburn. Ultraviolet rays at a wavelength of 320nm to 400nm, known as UV-A radiation, produce tanning of the skin. However, in the production process, UV-A rays can damage or harm the skin. In addition to the immediate disorders of sunburn, excessive exposure to sunlight can lead to
REF. 135046
to alterations of the skin. For example, prolonged and constant exposure to the sun can lead to actinic keratosis and carcinomas. Another long-term effect is the premature aging of the skin. This condition is characterized by skin that wrinkles, cracks and has loss of its elasticity. As stated above, sunscreens are typically formulated with the goal of inhibiting skin damage from the sun's rays. The sunscreen composition filters or blocks damaging UV-A and UV-B rays that can damage and damage the skin. It is believed that sunscreen agents do this by the absorption of UV-A and / or UV-B rays. In general, sunscreen compositions are oil and water emulsions. In this system, the UV absorption compounds are typically incorporated in the oil phase. Sunscreens can also include oxides of physical or inorganic metals that block the sun's rays. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are commonly used for this purpose. Consumers consider many factors when they purchase a sunscreen product. One of the
...
Most important considerations is the sun protection factor (SPF). This determines the amount of protection that the sunscreen composition provides during a given period of time. There are many to choose from these 5 and the selection will be based on the needs of the consumer. The consumer also gives consideration to the substantivity of the product, which is how durable the product is after applying it to the skin. These effects of how often the composition will need to be applied when the consumer
10 is outside in the sun. A third consideration is the sensation of the product and how well the product will spread on the skin. Typically, consumers require a product that feels soft and silky and is applied to a smooth continuous film on the skin. Another factor is life
15 of product shelf, which is determined by the physical and chemical stability of the sunscreen composition. In addition, the shape of the product will also play a part since there is a variety of selections such as lotions, gels, creams, sprays and sprays that are
20 available. The preferred form could finally be determined if the consumer decides to buy the product. The unique product forms can be attractive to many consumers who are looking for something
different. Sunscreens that are made in the form of an aerosol are not common, particularly aerosols that supply the product like a foam.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a sunscreen composition that is prepared as an aerosol product in the form of a foam. It is also an object of the present invention to provide a sunscreen composition that provides the superior foam quality. It is another object of the present invention to provide a sunscreen composition that is effective in protecting the skin against UV-A and UV-B rays. It is still another object of the present invention to provide a sunscreen composition that spreads evenly over the skin. To realize the aforementioned objects and advantages, the present inventionIn brief, it is a sunscreen composition that is prepared as an aerosol product. The composition contains a sunscreen agent, an emulsifier, a trainer / stabilizer
of foam, an opposite ion, and a propellant. In a preferred embodiment, the sunscreen composition also contains an emollient, a humectant, a preservative / antioxidant, and water. In addition, the ratio of foam former / stabilizer to counter ion should be approximately 1: 4 to approximately 5: 1.2. Most preferably, the ratio is approximately 1: 1 to approximately 5: 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention is a sunscreen composition in the form of an aerosol comprising a sunscreen agent, an emulsifier, a foaming agent / stabilizer, an ion counter, and a propellant.
Sunscreen agents Sunscreen agents that can be used in the present invention should be able to absorb or block the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation. In addition, they must be non-toxic and non-irritating when applied to the skin. Suitable sunscreen agents include, for example, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), benzophenone-1, benzophenone-2, benzophenone-3, benzophenone-4, benzophenone-β, benzophenone-8, benzophenone-12, methoxycinnamate, ethyl dihydroxypropyl -PABA, glyceryl PABA, homosalate, methyl anthranilate, octocrylene, octyl dimethyl PABA, octyl methoxycinnamate, octyl salicylate, PABA, 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid, triethanolamine salicylate, 3- (4-methylbenzylidene) -canfor, red petrolatum, and mixtures thereof. Preferred sunscreen agents are octyl methoxycinnamate, octyl salicylate, benzophenone-3, or mixtures thereof. The sunscreen agents may be present in an amount of about 1% by weight to about 40% by weight of the total weight of the composition of the present invention. The amount of sunscreen agents in the composition will depend on the desired sun protection factor (SPF). Normally, the higher the SPF, the greater the total amount of sunscreen agents. Preferably, the sunscreen agents are included at about 4% by weight to about 30% by weight.
Emulsifiers An emulsifier is an essential component of the present invention. An emulsifier makes it possible for two or more immiscible liquids to be combined homogeneously, while increasing the viscosity of the composition. In addition, the emulsifier acts to stabilize the composition. Emulsifiers that can be used in the present invention include sorbitan oleate, sorbitan sesquioleate, sorbitan isostearate, sorbitan trioleate, polyglyceryl-3-diisostearate, polyglycerol esters of oleic / isostearic acid, polyglyceryl-β-hexaricinolate, polyglyceryl- oleate, polyglyceryl-4-oleate / PEG-8 propylene glycol cocoate, oleamide DEA, sodium glyceryl oleate phosphate, hydrogenated vegetable glyceride phosphate and mixtures thereof. In addition, one or more synthetic polymers can be used as an emulsifier. For example, PVP copolymer Eicosene, acrylates / alkyl acrylate polymer of C? 0-C30, acrylate copolymer / steareth-20 methacrylate, copolymer PEG-22 / dodecyl glycol, copolymer of PEG-45 / dodecyl glycol, and mixtures thereof. Process The process used for the production of the present invention must be capable of forming a homogenous composition that can be sprayed or administered from an aerosol can. Typically, aerosol products are made by filling a concentrate in a can and then filling the can with propellant under vacuum conditions. The concentrate of the present invention can be prepared using techniques and methods well known in the art. In general, the ingredients are incorporated by mixing and by the application of heat if necessary, until the concentrate is uniform and homogeneous. If necessary, the concentrate can be homogenized to ensure homogeneity. The concentrate is then placed in a spray can which is finally filled with a propellant.
