Description

APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR PLACING CORNER PROTECTORS, OF DIFFERENT HEIGHTS, FOR LOADS STORED IN PALLETS CROSS REFERENCE OF APPLICATIONS FOR RELATED PATENTS The present application relates to the United States Patents Application Serial Number 173,422 registered December 23, 1993, entitled APPLIANCE FOR PLACING CORNER PROTECTORS AND UPPER PROTECTORS FOR PALLET LOADS , and granted to Jack I. Morantz et al., on July 16, 1996, as United States Patent 5,535,572.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates, generally, with apparatuses and methods for wrapping, fastening with strap or other forms for packaging loads or articles on pallets, and more particularly, it refers to apparatus and methods for placing corner protectors in the corner regions of the loads or articles before wrapping them, fastening them with straps or packaging them in any other way. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The apparatus for wrapping, strapping or in any other way packaging loads or articles that generally comprises a structure defining a wrapping station, strap application or packing to receive the articles or loads to be wrapped, hold with strapping or pack and rotate the unit to supply the material for wrapping, fastening with strapping or packaging, which rests on the structure so that it rotates around the articles or the load so that they are wrapped, fastened with strapping or packaging the same. The load or articles to be wrapped, strapped or, in some way, packaged, usually comprise pairs opposite the vertical sides, wherein the adjacent sides cover an angle so as to define a corner that extends vertically between the sides. same. In a usual manner, the cargo or article also has a horizontally arranged upper surface including a plurality of horizontally disposed top edges, which extend between the upper ends of the vertically extending corners. Before wrapping, fastening with strapping or, in some way, wrapping the load or items, you frequently want to apply protectors for the corners of the load or items, and apply a top protector or cap on top of the load or items for the purpose of protecting the vertically extending corner and the regions of the upper edge of the load or the articles so that they are not crushed with the film for wrapping or packing, or with the strip or spliced, or that the load or article suffer any damage during the transportation, shipment, or storage thereof. Generally, the corner protectors are made of paper or a cardboard material that is pre-bent in such a way that a pair of panels are defined that are in the angle and have lower surfaces that form the inner corners for the corresponding coupling with the outer corners of the load or items to be wrapped, fasten with strapping or packaging. The apparatus for applying the corner protector to the load or articles generally comprises, for each region of the corner of the load or articles, a reservoir for storing a plurality of protectors or supplying the corner protectors, and a grip or transfer mechanism. , operatively associated with the reservoir for removing the corner guard from the reservoir and transferring the corner protector to a particular or corresponding corner of the load or articles. One of the types of apparatuses of which so far have been proposed, and which are well known in the industry, is that described in U.S. Patents 5,535,572, aforementioned, the complete description of which is incorporated herein by reference. reference. As noted more particularly in U.S. Patent 5,535,572, mentioned above, once the corner protectors are placed on, or adjacent to, or supported to the outer regions of the corners of the load or articles to be wrapped, fastened with strapping, or packing, or gussetting, the process for wrapping, wrapping, packaging or strapping the articles or loading, and while the initial stage of wrapping, packaging or strapping the cargo or items is achieved, the pick-up or transfer mechanism of the corner guard is removed and repositioned for a subsequent operating cycle, in which the next Set of corner protectors will be placed in the outer regions of the corner of a load or set of different items which will be wrapped, fastened with strapping, or similarly packed. While the apparatus described in U.S. Patent No. 5,535,572 has been satisfactory from an operational point of view, and is a commercial success, it should be noted that this apparatus is programmed or operatively configured with the aim of applying simultaneously corner protectors in the four corners of the load stored in pallets or the set of items to be wrapped, strapped or similarly packed, in which the corner protectors are applied to the load or to the articles that are going to wrapping, strapping, or equally pack, necessarily, comprise almost the same length or height that corresponds, of course, to the height dimension of the load or set of items to be wrapped, strapping or similarly pack. Consequently, the different sets of articles or loading to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, comprise different length and height dimensions, the apparatus presented within the aforementioned US Patent No. 5,535,572 is not capable of accommodating, with ease, the needs of loads or articles having different heights or lengths because the corner protectors have predetermined dimensions which, obviously, correspond, for example, to the first set of loading or articles to be wrapped, strapping or packing, and does not correspond, in an appropriate way, to the second set of loads or items that have dimensions of height and length that are different to the first set of loads or articles, and the corner protectors corresponding thereto. Under these circumstances, the facility for manufacturing or packaging necessarily has to apply alternative or optional modes of operation, with the objective of having the ability to use the apparatus for wrapping, strapping or packaging described in U.S. Pat. 5,535,572 mentioned above. More particularly, an optional mode of operation would be a pre-selection of the loads or articles to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, in loading groups or articles that have substantially the same length and height dimensions, so that all groups of loading or articles having a first common length height or height dimensions are transported to the packing station to be wrapped, strapping or packing, and subsequently, all the loading groups or articles having a second height dimension and length, common, are transported to the wrapping, strapping or packaging station so that they are wrapped, strapped and packaged properly. However, this mode of operation is not very desirable if it is considered to be slow and inefficient since the loads or articles to be wrapped, strapped or packaged must be previously selected and can not be processed, that is, wrapped, strapped or package, in a random way, according, for example, to the order of arrival in which the orders of the customers are received. A correlated mode of operation should include the way to direct loads or items previously selected through different wrapping, strapping or packaging stations and the associated equipment so that they can handle these loading or items that have different length and height dimensionsHowever, this mode of operation obviously includes a significant increase in equipment costs, space for operation and similar aspects.
A third mode of operation should constitute the direction of the loads or articles, which have different height and length dimensions, along the path of the conveyor to a single wrapping station, strapping as well as packaging, and associated equipment, in a randomly and without having to make a prior selection of articles or loads to form groups according to common height or length dimensions, for the subsequent wrapping, strapping and packing thereof. However, when loads or articles having different height and length dimensions are introduced, placed or placed, the equipment or apparatus must be stopped for a predetermined period of time in order to allow an operator to load, in the tanks, the corner protectors with the appropriate dimensions, and in addition, the equipment must, in fact, be reprogrammed in such a way that the load protectors are arranged in the appropriate elevational positions with respect to the loads or articles to be wrapped, strapped or packaged . Obviously, this mode of operation requires intensive work and is operationally inefficient. Therefore, a novel and improved apparatus is needed, as well as the method for operating the same, in which the loads or articles to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, and having different length and height dimensions, are can transport to a single wrapping station, strap application or packaging in a random manner, and yet, a wrapping process, strap application or continuous packaging is achieved, without the need for the system to be temporarily stopped to install or change the corner protectors of the appropriate s inside the deposits for corner protectors, which correspond to an item or load to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, particular, already placed or arranged in the wrapping station, strapping or packaging. Objectives of the Invention According to the above, an object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved apparatus, as well as the method of operation thereof, to place corner protectors with different height and length dimensions on loads or stored items. on pallets which will be wrapped, fastened with strapping or packaging. Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved apparatus, as well as the method of operation, to place corner protectors of different height and length dimensions in loads or articles to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, stored in pallet , that effectively solve the disadvantages or operational disadvantages characteristic of the systems known in the art. A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved apparatus, as well as the method of operation thereof, for placing corner protectors having different height and length dimensions in loads or articles to be wrapped, fastening with straps or pack, stored in pallets, in which the loads or articles to be wrapped, fastened with strapping or packaging, and having different length and height dimensions, can be transported to a single wrapping station, strap application and packaging , randomly and nevertheless the process of wrapping, strap application and packaging is carried out continuously without needing to stop, temporarily it is system, so that the corner protectors that have the appropriate sare installed or changed, inside the deposits for the corner protectors, corresponding to the particular sof the load or article to be wrapped, hold n Strips or packaging, which is already placed or arranged in the wrapping station, for the application of strapping or packaging. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The foregoing as well as other objects are achieved in accordance with the teachings of the present invention through the provisions of a novel and improved apparatus., as well as the method of operation thereof, in which two different sets of deposits are provided for the corner protectors and two different sets of operatively associated grip arms, as well as the transfer mechanism. All deposits for corner protectors as well as the operatively associated grasping arm and the transfer mechanism, are placed or arranged in locations that are adjacent to the single station, towards which the articles or loads to be wrapped are directed. , strapping or packaging, which have different height and length dimensions. Each set of reservoirs for corner protectors and transfer mechanisms as well as the operatively associated gripper arm, comprises a pair of reservoirs for corner protectors and the transfer mechanisms as well as the operatively associated grasping arm which is placed near the regions of the opposite corners of the station for wrapping, fastening with strapping or packaging, such that they are placed near or within the corner regions located opposite of the load or articles to be wrapped, fastened with straps or pack. Each of the deposits for corner protectors, comprising the deposits for corner protectors disposed within the first set or pair of reservoirs for corner protectors, has corner protectors that have a first dimension of length and height, and each of the reservoirs for the corner protectors, comprising a reservoir placed within the second set or pair of reservoirs for corner protectors, has corner protectors that include a second dimension of length and height that is different from the height and length dimension of the corner protectors placed in the first set or pair of tanks for corner protectors. The load or items to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, are transported to the wrapping, strapping and packaging station by, for example, a suitable conveyor, and the wrapping, strapping, or packaging station comprises a rotating table on which the load or articles to be wrapped are placed, fastened with strapping or packaging during the operation to carry out these functions. A suitable sensor mechanism, such as a photodetector or the like, is operatively associated with the feed conveyor in such a way as to detect the height or length dimension of the load or articles, which are transported to the wrapping station, strip or packaging, since these are two dimensions of height and length different characteristics of the load or items to be wrapped, strapped or packaged.
Then, a sensor mechanism generates a signal, which indicates the first of the height and length dimensions characteristic of the load or article that is to be transported to the wrapping, strapping and packaging station, and sends it, for example, to a central processor that is capable of selectively activating a particular set of reservoirs for corner protectors and the transfer mechanism as well as the operatively associated grasping arm, depending on, and in relation to, or corresponding to the dimension of height and length detected, of the load or article that is being transported to the station for wrapping, strapping or packaging, so the corner protectors are mounted on a pair of opposite corners of the load or items to be wrapped, strapping or packaging. Subsequently, the rotating table is rotated 90 °, and those corners of the load or items, which are to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, and which do not yet have corner protectors, are arranged adjacent to the same set of reservoirs for corner protectors , and the grip arm as well as the transfer mechanism that were previously activated. These same deposits and grip arms, as well as the transfer mechanism, are then activated and the corner guards are mounted on the remaining corners of the load or items to be wrapped, strapped or packaged. This completes the process of wrapping, strapping or packaging, so that the rotary table is rotated 90 ° back to its original position from where the article that was wrapped, fastened with straps or packed from the station is unloaded, through the conveyor of suitable retirement. It is understood that, if the mechanism of the sensor detects a dimension of height and length of a load or article to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, particular, and that is transported to the wrapping, strapping or packaging station, by means of the feeding conveyor or entrance conveyor, different from the one noticed first, will activate the second set of tanks for corner protectors as well as the grip arm and the transfer mechanism, so that the corner protectors are mounted, which they have second dimensions of length and height, in the loads or articles that are going to be wrapped, strapped or packaged. In this way, the cargo or items having different length and height dimensions can be transported to the wrapping, strap and packaging station, in a random manner, and its wrapping, strapping or packaging can be achieved in a relatively continuous manner, without needing a temporary interruption or stopping of the apparatus or equipment, in order to supply the system with the corner protectors with the appropriate size. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Other objects, aspects and features as well as advantages of the present invention will be more fully appreciated after reading the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters are used to designate parts. same or corresponding throughout the various views, in which: Figure 1 is a top, flat view of the corners protector, as well as the improved grip and transfer apparatus, for the application or assembly of the corner protectors in parquet loads or articles to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, constructed in accordance with the principles and teachings of the present invention, and in which the cooperative parts thereof are shown; and Figure 2 is a right side view of the corner protector, as well as the improved grip and transfer apparatus, illustrated in Figure 1, as seen in the direction of arrow 2 shown in FIG. Initially it should be noted that the apparatus or general system 10 of the present invention is substantially similar to the general apparatus or system described in U.S. Patent No. 5,535,572 above, the mention of which is incorporated herein by reference. the present as reference, except as will be specifically noted in connection with the additions, alterations, changes and improvements that constitute the present invention when compared to the general system of U.S. Patent No. 5,535,572. It should further be noted, for example, that Figure 2 of the present patent application is very similar to Figure 1 of the aforementioned U.S. Patent No. 5,535,572, and consequently, in view of the fact that several are known. components of the apparatus or general system, these will not be described herein, and said components will be mentioned only briefly, with the aim of providing a basic understanding and understanding of the apparatus or system of the present invention. For further details regarding these components, and the operations thereof, reference may be made to U.S. Patent No. 5,535,572, since the detailed description of the present patent application is devoted, appropriately, to the required description. of novel and improved components, as well as the operation thereof, of the apparatus and system comprising the present invention. As best seen in Figure 2, the apparatus or system 10 of the present invention comprises a stationary structure or assembly 12 within the center of which is defined a station for wrapping, strapping, or packaging a load or articles 14, which a load or articles 16 is arranged so that it is wrapped, held by strapping or packing. As best seen in Figure 1, the cargo or articles 16 to be wrapped, strapped or packaged is transported to the station for wrapping, strapping or packaging4 by a supply conveyor belt, with roller 18, and the load or articles to be wrapped are unloaded, strapped or packaged from the station for such processes 14, through the appropriate conveyor belt, 20, the transportation direction goes from right to left as can be seen in Figure 1 and denoted with the arrows CD. The station for wrapping, strapping and packaging 14 has a rotary table 22, the purpose of which will be described below, and the rotary table 22 also has elements of the conveyor belt with rollers 24. With reference, again, specifically to Figure 2 , the stationary structure or assembly 12 is mounted on a vertically reciprocating structure assembly 26 that also rotates about a vertical axis 28. A roll of wrapping or packaging film 30 is mounted on a wrapping film carrier 32 which In turn, it is mounted in the assembly of the ring structure 26 in such a way that it rotates about the axis 28 and is therefore capable, for example, of wrapping with a suitable plastic film material the load 16 during the performance of the wrapping and packaging operations, as the plastic film wrapping material is removed or unloaded from the roll of packaging or wrapping film material. The stationary structure or assembly 12 further comprises an upper beam member or rail systems 34 on which another carriage or transport mechanism 36 is clamped, so that it can be moved. This last support or transport mechanism 36, a In turn, it supports a set for folding the upper cover protector 38 that removes or takes, in series, the top cover protectors from the top cover protector tank 40 and serves to apply these top layer protectors on the upper ends of the loads or articles 16 to be wrapped, strapped or packaged to protect the upper edge portions of the loads or items to be wrapped, strapped or packaged 16.
In reference, now, both Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, will describe the improved operating components constructed in accordance with the principles and teachings of the present invention, as well as the features of the present invention comprising improvements in the art. More particularly, the apparatus or system 10 further comprises a plurality of arms for gripping the corner protector and transfer assembly 42, 44, 46, 48 which are operatively associated with the tanks for corner protectors 50, 52, 54, 56 , respectively, in which the arm for gripping the corner protector and the transfer assemblies 42-48 as well as the tanks for the corner protectors 50-56 are arranged in a substantially rectangular array on the opposite sides of the wrapping station, fasten with strapping and pack 14 as well as a turntable 22, which is best seen in Figure 1. Unlike the arm for grabbing the corner protector and transfer sets, as well as the deposits for corner protectors, of the Patents from United States No, 5,535,572, in which all corner protective deposits of the patented system housed corner protectors substantially with the same dimensions of long Itud and height, which already in series were grabbed and transferred to particular corner locations in a load or set of items, to be wrapped, strapped or packaged, stored in pallets, individuals, deposits for corner protectors 50 -56 of the present invention are adapted to house corner protectors having substantially two different height and length dimensions, and the grip arm as well as the transfer mechanism or assemblies 42-48 operatively associated with the tanks 50-56, respectively , are adapted to deliver, transport or transfer these corner protectors with different length and height dimensions to regions of the specific corner of the load or items to be wrapped, strapped or packaged when selectively activated. More specifically, in accordance with the teachings and principles of the present invention, the arm for gripping the corner protector and the transfer assemblies 42-48, as well as the tanks for corner protectors 50-56, operatively associated, are divided from Effectively form or separate into two groups or sets of arms for gripping diagonally opposite corner protectors and transfer sets as well as deposits for corner protectors. For example, the grip arm of the diagonally opposite corner guard and the transfer assemblies 42 and 48, as well as the reservoirs for the corresponding corner protector 50 and 56, comprise a first set or group of transfer sets and grip arm. of the corner protector, as well as the deposits for the corner protectors, in which the deposits for the corner protectors 50 and 56 house the corner protectors having a first predetermined length or height dimension, as well as the gripper arm of the corner protector. diagonally opposite corner guard and the transfer assemblies 44 and 46, as well as the corresponding corner protector reservoirs 52 and 54, comprise a second set or group of arms for gripping the corner protector and the transfer sets, in addition to the deposits for the corner protectors, in which these tanks 52 and 54 house the corner protectors which have a sec a predetermined height and length dimension. The transfer and grip assemblies of the corner protectors, as well as the deposits for associated corner protectors within a particular set or groups, of transfer sets or the grip arm for the corner protector, as well as the deposits for protectors of corner, will be activated selectively in unison, at a particular time, with the aim of mounting the corner protectors in the regions of particular corners of the load or items stored in pallet, which will be wrapped, fastened with strapping or packaging, while the transfer sets and arms to grip the corner protector, as well as the deposits for the corner protectors, from another set or group of transfer set and grip arm for the corner protectors, in addition to the deposits for corner protectors, remain inactive as will be appreciated more easily in the description presented below. In order to determine which is the set or group of transfer assemblies and arms to grip the corner guard, as well as the deposits for the corner protectors, which are going to be activated, a suitable detection system is used to determine the height of the load or stack of articles placed on the supply conveyor 18 and transported to the wrapping station, strapping or packaging 14. The detection system may be, for example, a photodetection system comprising a phototransmitter 58 and a photoreceptor 60 positioned, for example, on opposite sides of the supply conveyor 18, although these photo transmitter and photoreceptor may alternatively be placed in an upstream position, from that position presented in relation to the web. supply conveyor 18, such as, for example, in the position in which the load or stack of items is being assembled tea. In any case, the photoreceptor 60 is connected, electronically, to a central processor 62, and, in turn, the processor 62 is electronically connected to the transfer assembly and gripper arms of the corners 42-48 as well as to the deposits for corner protectors 50-56 so that they activate selectively. In this way, it can be seen that when a photoreceptor 60 detects a load or stack of articles having a predetermined first height and length dimension, then a first signal is generated and transmitted to the central processor 62, in turn, a first corresponding signal is generated in the processor 62 so as to simultaneously activate the transfer and grip assemblies of the corner protector 42 and 48, as well as the reservoirs for protectors 50 and 56, while the grip arm for the corner protectors and the transfer assemblies 44 and 46, as well as the deposits for corner protectors 52 and 54, remain inactive. Alternatively, when a photoreceptor 60 detects a load or a stack of articles having a second dimension of predetermined height and length, then a second signal is generated which is transmitted to the central processor 62, which in turn corresponds to the second generated signal by the processor 62 so as to activate simultaneously the transfer assembly and the gripper arm of the corner protectors 44 and 46, as well as the reservoirs for the corner protectors 52 and 54, while the transfer and arm assemblies grip for corner protectors 42 and 48 as well as deposits for corner protectors 50 and 56 remain inactive.
