Abstract

A tape (12) includes a backing layer (22) and an adhesive layer (24) formed on the backing layer. A plurality of lines of perforations (32) extend across the tape to separate the tape (12) into sheets. The sheets have progressively increasing lengths such that, when the sheets are wound into a roll (10), each sheet is longer than the sheet underneath it. When in a roll, the outermost sheet covers all of the lines of perforations to reduce instances of the tape tearing in a downweb direction.

Description

PROGRESSIVELY PERFORATED RIBBON ROLL TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to tape rolls. More particularly, the present invention relates to perforated ribbon rolls.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Most tape rolls are used by first removing a length of tape from the roll before using the tape for its intended purpose. Typically, a length of tape is detached from the roll and cut to be used. In some applications, the tape is used although on the roll and is removed after use.
The lint removal tape is used although still on a roll to remove lint and other small particles from the fabric, such as clothing. The tape is removed from the roll only after being used, to dispose of it. In the form of a roll, the lint removal tape is typically wound in a core with the adhesive side of the tape wrapped externally for use. A roll of lint removal tape is used Ref. 031050 generally in an applicator. Various rolls of lint removal tape are known, such as those described in U.S. 5,027,465 and U.S. 5,388,300.
The rolls of tape are perforated frequently for the easiest removal of individual sheets. The material that has perforations and is wound in a roll becomes wavy and deformed because the perforations create a protruding point in the roll due to the raised material. By aligning the perforations in a roll with each line of perforations substantially radially above the line of perforations in the sheet below it, a protuberance is formed in the roll. With a roll of 60 sheets, this can create a protrusion greater than 0.63 centimeters (0.25 inches) high. This makes the oval roll, makes the roll difficult to unwind and use.
Also, with aligned drill lines, a user has difficulty determining which leaf to grab to remove a leaf. The user can grab more than one sheet, wasting material and frequently causing the material to tear improperly, in a longitudinal direction, from fabric downward. The improper tearing also occurs without aligned perforations, where the sheets have equal length and an outer sheet does not necessarily cover the adjacent inner sheet. There is a need for a perforated tape roll with improved fabric tear down.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION A length of tape has a first longitudinal end, a second longitudinal end, a first side edge, and a second side edge. The tape includes a reinforcing layer and an adhesive layer on the reinforcing layer. The tape is formable in a roll having a plurality of windings.
A plurality of perforation lines extend through at least most of the width of the ribbon between the first and second side edges to separate the sheet web. The sheets have increasing lengths progressively from the first end to the second end such that, when the sheets are wound on a roll, each sheet is longer than the sheet below it.
When the tape forms a roll, the outermost sheet has a front edge and a free rear end, defined by a line of perforations. The outermost sheet covers all perforation lines. The line of perforations defining the rear end of the outermost sheet provides for the outermost sheet to adhere tightly to itself. This reduces the instances of tearing the tape in a downward direction of fabric.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roll of tape of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top view of a portion of the tape.
Figure 3 is a side view of the tape of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a side view of the ribbon roll of Figure 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Figures 1-3 show a roll 10 of lint removal tape 12. As shown in Figure 2, the tape 12 has a first longitudinal end 14, a second longitudinal end 16, a first side edge 18, and a second lateral edge 20. As shown in Figure 3, the tape is formed of at least two layers, a reinforcing layer 22 and an adhesive layer 24 and can be made from any of the known materials. The tape is formable in a roll having a plurality of windings.
The reinforcing layer 22 has a first side 26 and a second side 28 and can be made of, for example, paper or plastic film. Suitable paper reinforcements include saturated plain paper and crepe. Suitable plastic film reinforcements include polypropylene, polyethylene, polypropylene and polyethylene copolymers, polyesters, and vinyl acetates. The polypropylene can be biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) or biaxially oriented polypropylene simultaneously (SBOPP). The reinforcing material may be composable, degradable, painted, printed, and may be of different surface textures or embossed.
The adhesive layer 24 is placed on the first side 26 of the reinforcement layer 22. It can be formed on the first full side, or the reinforcement layer can not be coated with adhesive along one or both of the side edges. Alternatively, the side edges can be covered with adhesive and then they can be peeled off using waxes, lacquers, or inks for example.
The adhesive may include hot melt covered formulations, cubertcis formulations by transfer, solvent-covered formulations, and latex formulations. The adhesives useful according to the present invention include all pressure sensitive adhesives. Pressure-sensitive adhesives are usually sticky at room temperature and can be adhered to a surface by applying, at most, a slight finger pressure. Examples of adhesives useful in the invention include those based on general polyacrylate compositions; polyvinyl ether; diene-containing rubber, - such as natural rubber, polyisoprene, and polyisobutylene; polychloroprene, butyl rubber; butadiene-acrylonitrile polymer; thermoplastic elastomer; block copolymers, such as block copolymers of styrene-isoprene and styrene-isoprene-diene, and styrene-butadiene polymer; poly-alpha-olefin; amorphous polyolefin; silicone; ethylene-containing copolymer, such as ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylacrylate, and ethyl methacrylate; polyurethane; polyamide; epoxy; polyvinylpyrrolidone and vinylpyrrolidone copolymers; polyesters; and mixtures of the above. Additionally, the adhesives may contain additives, such as tackifiers, plasticizers, fillers, antioxidants, stabilizers, pigments, dispersant particles, curatives, and solvents.
A general description of the useful pressure sensitive adhesives can be found in Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Engineering, Vol. 13, iley-Interscience Publishers (New York, 1988). A further description of the useful pressure sensitive adhesives can be found in Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Technology, Vol. i, Interscience Publishers (New York, 1964).
The tape 12 is formed in a roll 10 having a plurality of windings with the adhesive layer 24 covering it externally, winding the tape in only itself. The support material, such as a core, a coater, or any other material that can support and provide rigidity and strength to the tape roll, is optional. In the illustrated modes, none is used.
The ribbon roll 10 may also include a third layer. A low adhesion backsheet (LAB) 30 may be formed on the second side 28 of the reinforcement layer 22 to facilitate removal of the outer tape winding from the roll 10. Appropriate LAB layers include the silicones, fluorochemicals, acrylates, and polyvinylacetates. Numerous different layers can be added to the tape, such as primers to increase the adhesion of the adhesive layer 24 to the reinforcement layer 22. Also, the printed material can be located on the first side of the reinforcing layer under the adhesive, or on the second side of the reinforcement layer either under or over any layer of LAB 30. This printed material may be a propaganda, instructions, or other information. The tape may contain deodorants, perfumes, antistatic materials, and encapsulated cleaning chemicals. Also, the reinforcing layer 22 can be modified by flame treatment, corona treatment, and corrugation.
A plurality of lines of perforations 32 divides the tape into discrete sheets, helps to eliminate the outer tape winding of the roll 10. The perforations 32 are made before the tape 12 is formed in a roll 10. Each sheet is defined by the first and second side edges 18, 20, and two lines of adjacent perforations 32.
There are n lines of perforations 32 that extend through at least most of the width of the tape 12 between the first and second side edges 18, 20 to separate the tape into n + 1 sheets. The plurality of perforation lines 32 may extend partially or completely across the width of the ribbon. The sheets have increasing lengths progressively from the first longitudinal end 14 to the second longitudinal end 16, such that when the sheets are wound on a roll, each sheet is longer than the sheet below it.
When the tape 12 forms a roll 10, the outermost sheet 34 has a front edge 36 and a free rear end 38, defined by a line of perforations. As shown in Figure 4, the outermost sheet 34 covers all lines of perforations 32. Starting from the inside of the roll 10, each line of perforations 32 can be said to advance with each additional tape winding. When the tape is wound on a roll, each sheet completely covers the sheet before it.
The line of perforations that defines the back end 38 of the outermost sheet foresees that the outermost sheet adheres tightly to itself. This reduces the instances of tearing of the tape in a downward direction of fabric not parallel to the line of perforations. This occurs because the perforations act as a detached area. In one embodiment (such as where the punching knife has a longer side on the downward weave side of the tape), during the punching process, at least most of the perforations in each line create an excessive folded material (with adhesive facing down, away from the outer leaves), they are slightly higher, and have holes. These characteristics individually and in combination act as a detached area. Also, a traction roll can be overreacted to lengthen the perforated area and make a larger detached area. In this way, the line of perforations under the outermost sheet (which defines the rear end of the outermost sheet) helps to eliminate this sheet.
An overlap (the distance of the perforation line 32 from the trailing end 38 is behind the front edge 36 of the outermost sheet 34) of approximately 0.3175 centimeters (0.125 inches) works well to aid tear. An overlap of more than 1,270 centimeters (0.500 inches) or a lack of juxtaposition (the distance of the line of perforations 32 from the rear end 38 is in front of the front edge 36 of the outermost sheet 34) does not help tear.
Any number of perforations can be used to create the line and any shape and length can be used for the perforations. A driller using a high-performance motion control system can be designed to create sheets of increasing length. The control system changes the speed of the perforator to add the necessary length to the successive sheets. This length is adjusted until the total number of sheets desired is obtained. Then the control system automatically adjusts the total number of sheets and the length until the beginning of a new roll. With an overlapping length of approximately 0.3175 centimeters (0.125 inches), each sheet should be 0.3175 centimeters + 0.076 centimeters (0.125 inches + 0.030 inches) longer than the previous sheet. 0.076 centimeters (0.030 inches) (which is twice the p times the thickness of the tape) are added to compensate for the diameter of the larger roll, since the tape is rolled (for a tape width of 0.0122 centimeters (0.0048 inches) and a starting diameter of 4.45 centimeters (1.75 inches)).
Various changes and modifications can be made in the invention without departing from its scope or spirit. For example, although the embodiments illustrated show rolls with no lint removal tape core, the invention can be used with rolls with lint removal tape core, other rolls of tape wound from the adhesive side out, and coiled ribbon rolls. from the adhesive side inwards.
It is noted that in relation to this date, the best method known by the applicant to carry out the aforementioned invention, is the conventional one for the manufacture of the objects to which it relates.
