Description
FIXING DEVICE FOR REMATE FOR A WINDOW COVER SUPPORT ROD
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to an arrangement for fixing a decorative top to a window cover support rod. More particularly, the invention relates to an arrangement for securing a cap to a hollow support rod by applying pressure to an extension of the cap in a sleeve or hull made of a softer material than the material comprising the cap. In the field of window coverings, different techniques are used to hold curtains and the like on a window. These techniques typically include the use of a support rod secured to a wall or window frame by cantilever brackets. The rods often carry rings or other intermittent support devices to retain the curtains, which can be moved manually or mechanically along the support rod to cover or uncover the window opening. Alternatively, the curtains can be hung directly on the support rods. The ends of the rods are commonly covered either by curtains or exposed, extending beyond either side of the window opening. A common decorative technique used in conjunction with exposed ends of window cover support rods includes the use of finials that terminate the support rods with an attractive element. Although such finials can be held in a variety of shapes, they typically fit either inside the rods, around the rods or both within co or around the ends of the rods. Portions of the finials may be tapered or dimensioned to provide an interference fit within, or around, the ends of the rods to provide a secure hold of the finish on the rod. Additional securing devices may be included in a fastening portion of the fastener, such as set screws designed to engage the support rod to provide a holding force that prevents the removal of the fastener. Although these fastening arrangements are generally suitable for many types of fasteners and support rods, they are not without disadvantages. For example, where rigid rods, such as relatively thick wall or welded seam rods, are used, it may be difficult or impossible to apply pressure to an interference fit cap on the rod. In addition, where finials having large or heavy decorative sections are used, the interference fit may not be sufficient to retain the fastener securely in the desired position. In addition, when the closures are made of a particularly hard material, such as molten or forged metal, the required interference fit can be very difficult or impossible to obtain by common manufacturing practices without incurring excessive costs. This is particularly true for sand smelters and the like, where the dimensional tolerances are relatively large. Therefore, there is a need for an improved arrangement for fixing and holding a decorative top on a window cover support rod. In particular, there is a need for a back-up support arrangement that is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and use, and that provides effective support for various types of finishes, including relatively large or heavy finials, and finials made of hard materials such as metal. cast or forged.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The invention provides a novel arrangement for securing a decorative top to a window cover support tube or tube, designed to respond to these needs. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a window cover support includes, in combination, a hollow support tube, a pair of decorative finials. and a pair of support sleeves. The support tube ends at an open end. The cuffs are held at the open ends of the tube and each includes a decorative portion and a generally cylindrical support post extending from the decorative portion towards one end of the support tube. The support sleeves are housed inside the ends of the intermediate support tube to the support tube and the support post of respective caps. The support sleeves are comprised of the support tube and the backrest support posts to maintain a tight fit, such as a friction, interference or pressure adjustment, between them and thereby hold and retain the cap on the support tube. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, a window cover support includes a support rod, first and second decorative finials, and a first and second support sleeves. The support rod has first and second hollow ends, and the finials are supported at respective ends of the rod. Each top includes a decorative portion and a rigid support post. The support sleeves are arranged intermediate between the first and second ends and the first and second closures, respectively. The support rims have external surfaces that conform to internal surfaces of the hollow ends, and internal surfaces molded to engage the support posts in an interference fit to hold and retain the rims on the support rod. The invention also provides an innovative method for holding a decorative top on a support rod. In accordance with this aspect of the invention, the cap is provided with an elongate support post to hold it on the support rod. The method includes the steps of applying pressure to a support sleeve at a hollow end of the support rod, the support sleeve being made of a material softer than the support post of the finish. Pressure is applied to the top support post to the support sleeve to establish an interference fit between the support post and the support sleeve. The support sleeve is preferably provided with a stop or flange to limit its insertion into the support rod. The support rod is preferably similarly provided with a stop, as well as with a tapered tip to facilitate its insertion into the support sleeve.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will be more fully understood from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference numbers refer to like parts, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view of an auction , support sleeve and rod or support tube before assembly, the last two elements are shown in section to illustrate their preferred construction; and Figure 2 is a view of the elements shown in Figure 1 after assembly.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED MODALITIES
Turning now to the drawings and referring to Figure 1, one end of a window cover support is illustrated and includes a decorative top 10, a support sleeve 12 and a support rod or tube 14. Although only one At the end of the support arrangement in Figure 1, it will be understood that the arrangement includes a second end of substantially identical construction. It should also be understood that the support rod or tube 14 will typically be installed over a window opening, door or similar location by the use of lifting support brackets (not shown) or the like, and that it will hang thereon a drapery, curtain or another cover (not shown). Because such support brackets and window covers are themselves well known in the art and are not part of the present invention, they have not been illustrated and will not be described in detail. As shown in Figure 1, the cap 10 includes a decorative portion 16 and a support post IB that extends therein. The support post 18 has a generally cylindrical external surface 20 ending in a tapered tip 22. An embedment surface or stop 24 is preferably formed at an end of the post 18 opposite the tip 22, such as in the region where the post 18 is attached to the decorative portion 16. It should be noted that, although in the illustrated preferred embodiment the post 18 is round in cross section, it could have any transverse shape, such as a square or diamond shape. Further, although in the preferred embodiment the top 10 is cast or forged metal to form a one-piece construction, it can also be formed from other materials, such as molded plastics, and could be assembled from two or more pieces of the same or different material. 9 However, as described more fully below, the present arrangement is particularly suitable for holding cast or forged metal finials. The support sleeve 12 is formed in a hollow cylindrical wall portion 26 and has an outer surface 28 and an inner surface 30. At one end, the wall portion 26 ends in a tapered or beveled tip, while at the opposite end , the wall portion 26 includes an annular embedding flange 34 which extends outwardly from the outer surface 28. The support sleeve 12 is preferably made of a moldable plastic material and is substantially softer than the material comprising the material. support post 18. In the currently preferred embodiment, the sleeve 12 is made of polypropylene, such as Amoco 1016. The support tube 14 can be a completely tubular hollow structure or, alternatively it can be a hollow rod only in the vicinity of its ends. Such support rods are well known in the art and are typically made of steel, aluminum, bronze or a plastic material.
The tube 14 includes a generally cylindrical side wall 36 which has an internal surface 38 and terminates at an end surface 40. Although the tube 14 may be a rolled tube having a longitudinal slit as is common in the art, the present arrangement is particularly adapted for use with rigid support rods or tubes having little or no radial flexibility (eg seamless tubes, welded pipes, etc.). The spine 10, the sleeve 12 and the support tube 14 are assembled as shown in Figure 2. After mounting the tube 14 in a conventional manner and hanging a curtain or the like thereof, pressure is applied to the support sleeve 12 towards the end of the tube 14. The outer surface 28 of the sleeve 12 is preferably disensioned with respect to the inner surface of the tube 14 to provide some degree of adjustment by force or interference between them. The tapered tip 22 of the sleeve 12 facilitates its centering and insertion into the tube 14. In this way, the sleeve 12 is pressed towards the tube 14 until the embedment or stop 34 makes contact with the end surface 40, thus preventing any insertion. additional cuff Then the cap 10 is installed inside the tube 14 by pressing the support post 18 into the sleeve 12. The outer surface 20 of the post 28 is preferably dimensioned with respect to the internal surface 30 of the sleeve 12 to provide a force or interference fit between they. The tapered tip 22 of the post 19 facilitates its insertion into the sleeve 12 and the abutment surface 24 limits its insertion. A similar operation is carried out at the opposite end of the tube 14 to complete the installation. As will be appreciated by the skilled person, once installed, the cap 10 is held solidly in the tube 14 by virtue of the hermetic adjustments between the surface of the inner wall of the tube 38 and the outer surface 28 of the sleeve 12 and between the inner surface 30 of the sleeve 12 and the outer surface 20 of the support post 18. By providing sufficient coupling lengths between these surfaces, the arrangement described above can be adapted to hold ridges having considerable weight. In addition, because the support sleeve 12 is preferably made of a material that is softer than the support post 18, the sleeve 12 can be deformed during installation of the endpiece 10. This feature of the arrangement is particularly useful for assembling finials of molten or forged metal in rigid tubes or rods, eliminating the need for close tolerances in the support post of the auction. In addition, because the sleeve 12 can be elastically deformed a little during the installation of the cap 10, the cap 10 can be adjusted by force or interference in the tube 14, removed therefrom, and subsequently replaced without plastically deforming neither the tube 14 nor the support post 18 so that it could gradually deteriorate the desired adjustment between them.
Although the modalities illustrated in the figures and described above are currently preferred, it should be understood that these modalities are offered by way of example only. The invention is not intended to be limited to any particular embodiment, but is intended to extend it to different modifications that nevertheless fall within the scope of the appended claims. For example, although the adjusted surfaces of the tube 14, sleeve 12 and post 18 generally conform to each other to provide the described adjustments, these surfaces have any desired radial shape. In addition, it may be convenient in certain cases to provide discontinuous or intermittent surfaces in any or all of these members, such as surfaces having grooved or star cross sections.
