Abstract

A marking instrument, especially a reservoir pen, has a diaphragm (8) which is deflected by retraction of the marking tip to open a port (7) to connect a feed channel (5) to the reservoir (2) containing the marking fluid. A cavity (11) communicating with the port (7) has a volume which reduces when the diaphragm deflects to open the valve and increases when the diaphragm moves to close the valve. The diaphragm has an integral forwardly extending skirt (10) which seals against the feed member (4) at the forward end of the skirt. These features are effective in preventing marking liquid flowing to the tip when not required and leakage of marking fluid between the diaphragm and feed member.
