Abstract
Se clono y determino la secuencia nucleotídica de una molécula completa de ADN complementario que codifica para la ezima bifuncional trehalosa-6-fosfato sintasa/fosfatasa de plantas. La molécula de ADN complementario codifica par auna enzima bifuncional que sintetiza trehalosa. El ADN complementario se puede subclonar en vectores apropiados para su expresion en células huésped. Las células transformadas producen trehalosa, en contraste con las células no transformadas, lo cual aumentará la tolerancia al estrés por calor, frío, salinidad y sequía. Esta invencion se podrá usar para mejorar la termotolerancia y osmotolerancia de las plantas cultivadas en zonas áridas o semiáridas y también contribuirá a disminuir el uso de agua de riego. Por otro lado, la trehalosa producida en plantas transgénicas podría incrementar la vida de anaquel de los productos agrícolas, preservándolos por períodos largos en estado deshidratado sin que estos pierdan sus propiedades de olor, sabor y textura, una vez que sean rehidratados. Por ultimo, la sobreproduccion de trehalosa con bacterias, levaduras, hongos, células animales o plantas transgénicas constituirá una fuente barata de este producto para ser usado como aditivo para preservar diversos productos biologicos o alimentos procesados.
