Abstract
Un proceso para convertir ácido sulfhídrico que esta contenido en una corriente gaseosa de alimentación en azufre elemental e hidrogeno. El proceso comprende el contacto de la corriente gaseosa de alimentación con un solvente polar orgánico que tiene una antraquinona, y opcionalmente un agente acomplejante, disuelto en la misma, reaccionando el ácido sulfhídrico gaseosos y la antraquinona para producir azufre y una antrahidroquinona en el solvente, y deshidrogenando catalíticamente la antrahidroquinona a antraquinona e hidrógeno. De conformidad con la presente invención, una cantidad relativamente pequeña de agua se añade al solvente polar orgánico incrementando por lo mismo el azufre elemental que se precipita y se recupera así. La adición de agua antes o durante la producción de azufre incrementa también la selectividad del producto del hidrogeno en la subsecuente deshidrogenación de la antrahidroquinona.
