Se describe 4'-metoxiacetofenonas halogenadas de fórmula (I), en donde X es un halógeno; Y es un halógeno; y n es 1 ó 2, como microbicidas para inhibir el crecimiento de microorganismos en sistemas acuosos o en superficies, así como para inhibir la formación de lama en sistemas acuosos y composiciones biácidas que contienen cantidades efectivas de las 4'-metaxiacetofenonas halogenadas.
