Abstract

A hand-held hair styling device (901,1001) permits precise introduction of a curl into the hair (191). A selectively actuatable drive system (961,1061) drives rotation of one or more rotatable bases (937,1037), each carrying a hair styling element (935,1035) on it. The drive system (961,1061) includes a transmission (971,1071) connecting an actuator (975,1075) to the rotatable base (937,1037) to transmit the movement of the actuator (975,1075) in one direction into rotation of the rotatable base (937,1037) in a first direction. The transmission (971,1071) is configured to prevent rotation of the rotatable base (937,1037) in a second direction opposite to the first direction upon movement of the actuator (975,1075) in an opposite direction. In another aspect the transmission (971,1071) is configured to produce a single 360° rotation of the rotatable base (937,1037) upon movement of the actuator (975,1075) in the first direction.
