Abstract
A woven laminated plastic bag having an easy open feature is provided. The easy open feature is generally defined by a weakened portion in the bag. In various aspects the bag can be fabricated from woven polypropylene and/or polyethylene layer which can be laminated with a film layer, can form a pinch bottom bag, and can have one or both sides include graphics and/or printing. The bag can also provide a top end and/or a bottom end either or both of which provide a discrete area which may contain discrete graphics and/or printing.
Description
PLASTIC BAGS WITH EASY OPENING
Field of the Invention
The present disclosure relates to plastic bags with better opening characteristics.
Background of the Invention
Conventional plastic bags of a variety of sizes and shapes are used in various situations. Bulk materials, such as flour, sugar, rice, seeds, animal feed, chemicals, powdered materials or the like, for example, have been commonly packaged in plastic bags woven in the past. Pet food, poultry seeds and other products sold in retail stores have not been commonly packaged in conventional woven plastic bags. Among other reasons for this, woven plastic bags were considered too rudimentary to be printed with high quality graphics suitable for the type of packaging intended for the consumer. In addition, the high-speed requirements in filling and packaging operations limited the use of woven bags in these applications.
Laminated woven sacks (LWS) were developed using a woven polypropylene structure laminated to a bioriented polypropylene film (BOPP) that can be printed on the back with the
high quality graphics suitable for the type of packaging intended for the consumer. The LWS provide a stronger and more attractive bag than the more conventional multi-walled bags used for that purpose over the past 20 years. Due to its robust sturdy construction, conventional LWS bags are commonly closed when sewing at both ends. These LWS have recently been successful and have been successfully replaced by conventional multi-walled paper bags used in the pet food industry for many years.
An important disadvantage of the stitched LWS has been the closing of bags in production lines for high-speed filling, such as those for filling such bags with pet food. Experience has shown that sewing production lines are commonly slower than filling multi-walled folded bottom bags. In addition, sewn bags do not provide a pleasant aesthetic or show useful cleaning at the ends of the bags, thereby making it difficult for consumers to identify or find a desired brand quickly when the bags are displayed on shelves at the point of sale, as when they stack. In addition, the stitched ends required the puncture of the plastic bags and therefore, resulted in a bag that is not sealed, which leads to a somewhat reduced shelf life and possible infestation of the contents of the bag. Thus, there is a need for sacks
folded laminated fabrics that overcome these disadvantages in the filling and closing operations while allowing a visualization of the attractive graphics of the ends of the bags in the retail store and also the supply of a durable resistant bag that remains sealed.
A major disadvantage of the newly developed folded laminated bottom woven bag, however, is that it does not include an easy opening feature that allows the consumer or buyer to quickly and easily open the bag without the use of scissors or knives. There is a need for such a folded woven sack with a folded bottom which is easy to open without the use of scissors, knives or other similar instruments, and which does not require the use of excessive force.
Woven plastic bags have been used and are conventional for certain applications. An example of a conventional woven plastic bag is provided in American Patent Number 4,373,979 ("the '979" patent), published on February 15, 1983. The' 979 patent describes the use of woven polyethylene or polypropylene strips of high density mostly oriented longitudinally in a bag construction in which the bag is formed of a stitched tube made of woven plastic material. The stitched tube has reinforcements on either side and, when a portion is cut from the rest of the tube, a bag having two open unsealed ends is provided. The '799 patent describes the use of spot welding
ultrasonic to seal the portions of a bag made of such woven plastic strips, as compared to sewing the seams of a bag or using a hot-melt glue to seal the reinforcement that forms the fold. Thus, the '979 patent is incorporated herein by reference herein. The '979 patent is intended to be an improvement for sealing a plastic bag. As noted in the '979 patent, sewing an end tends to be slow, thus adding time to the manufacturing process. In addition, ends sewn into a conventional bag tend to be a weak portion of the bag, and a likely location for tears, tears, and subsequent loss of contents during storage, shipping and handling. In addition, such bags may not provide sufficient protection against the infestation of bugs and / or insects.
Another example of the plastic bags is disclosed in the US Patent Application Publication Number US 2010/0029455 A1 ("the publication '455"), published on February 4, 2010, which describes the production of fabric sections of a flexible fabric material that is provided with detachment lines by means of the laser beam process at the distance of the length of the fabric sections that will be formed. The detachment lines weaken the flexible fabric material, but do not result in complete separation of the fabric sections from the fabric material, which occurs after the
tearing of flexible fabric material. The publication '455 is incorporated by reference in this document.
More recently, some types of plastic bags have provided improvements in sealing the ends of the bags. For example, in the American Patent Number
6,800,051 B2 ("the '051 patent"), published on October 5, 2004, describes a process for sealing bags with lateral folds made of plastic film. According to the '051 patent, a fabric of the plastic tubular film is cut to provide a stepped separation along a perforation, so that a wall (eg, the front wall) projects beyond the opposite wall. (for example, the back wall). The projection portion of the first wall is then folded and sealed to the opposite wall by means of a plastic glue such as a polyurethane or hot melt adhesive. The '051 patent is hereby incorporated by reference herein. However, such bags involve plastic films, non-woven plastic materials, and therefore, can not handle the weight loads of conventional bulk bags made of paper and other materials. Such bags are useful for only certain light content, such as bread.
There are a variety of conventional ways to provide reusable openings in the bags. For example, American Patent Number 6,478,465 B 1 ("the
patent '465"), published on November 12, 2002, discloses a peelable opening in a pouch construction with an open top part having a multi-wall pleated bottom. The '465 patent also discloses the use of an adhesive layer that can be used so that the bag opening can be closed again. The '465 patent is incorporated herein by reference herein.
In other types of conventional plastic bags, such as those used in retail and grocery stores, it is known to use the weakened portion provided by means of one or more perforations in the wall of the plastic bag. A number of methods have been considered in relation to such bags, which include those shown in American Patent Number 5, 188,235 (the '235 patent), published on February 23, 1993, as well as in the Patent Application Number.
American Published US 2005/0087542 A1 (the '542 application), published on April 28, 2005, in the American Patent Number 5,979,655 (the' 655 patent), published on November 9, 1999, and in the Application Number of US Published Patent US 2006/0072856 (the '856 application), published on April 6, 2006. However, none of these bags are woven bags, let alone bags with multiple layers. The '235 patent, the' 655 patent, the '542 application, and the' 856 application are incorporated herein by reference.
Commonly, woven and non-woven bags are sealed with a
fold single or double at each end with the tape over the single or double fold, sewing at both ends, or with a zipper at one end and a single or double fold at the other end. However, the opening of woven and some non-woven bags has proved difficult, due to the strength of the bag. Therefore, woven and non-woven bags that are easier to open, do not add much cost or time to manufacture, and are not susceptible to tearing, puncture, inadvertent fracture, or the like are necessary.
Brief Description of the Invention
The present disclosure provides the woven and non-woven plastic bags comprising an easy-open feature, which make the presently disclosed knitted and non-woven plastic bags easier to open than conventional woven and non-woven plastic bags.
The present disclosure provides a bag comprising a front wall, a back wall, an interior surface, an exterior surface, an upper end, a lower end, a first layer and a second layer, each of the front wall and the wall rear has an inner surface, an outer surface, an upper end and a lower end, where the first layer comprises a polymer and the second layer comprises a polymer bonded to the first layer, and where the bag comprises an easy opening feature located in the front wall of the bag, the back wall of the bag, or a
combination of them. The first layer may comprise a woven polymer, including, but not limited to, polypropylene, high density polyethylene, low density polyethylene, polyester, or any combination thereof. The second layer may comprise a polymeric film, including, but not limited to, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide, or any combination thereof, or paper or a portion of coated paper suitable for printing graphics of high quality on it, or a combination of a polymer film and a convenient portion of paper to have high quality printing graphics on it. The second layer may alternatively comprise an oriented polymeric film, including, but not limited to, oriented polypropylene, biaxially oriented polypropylene, oriented polyethylene, biaxially oriented polyethylene, oriented polyethylene terephthalate, biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate, oriented polyamide, biaxially oriented polyamide , or any combination thereof. The first layer and the second layer can be laminated together. Therefore, in certain aspects the first layer may consist or consist essentially of a woven polymer and the second layer may consist or consist essentially of a film.
In general, the easy opening feature comprises a weakened area. The weakened area may comprise a cut that has a first end and a second end, where the cut
it penetrates through at least a portion of the front wall of the bag, the back wall of the bag, or a combination thereof. In certain aspects, the cut may comprise a line or an open form, including, but not limited to, a carat, a semicircle, an open square, or an open rectangle. The weakened area may further comprise a plurality of perforations extending from the first end or the second end of the cut, where the plurality of perforations penetrates through at least a portion of the front wall of the bag, of the rear wall of the bag, or a combination thereof. In various aspects, the plurality of perforations extends approximately 5%, approximately 10%, approximately 15%, about 20%, about 25%, about 30%, about 35%, about 40%, about 45%, about 50%, about 55%, about 60%, about 65%, about 70%, about 75%, about 80%, approximately 85%, approximately 90%, approximately 95% or approximately 99% of a distance through the front wall of the bag, the back wall of the bag, or a combination thereof. In certain embodiments, the plurality of perforations extends from the first end of the cut to the second end of the cut. The plurality of perforations may extend around one or more walls
of the bag, or it may alternatively be extended to form a shape, which includes, but is not limited to, a circle, a triangle, a square or a rectangle. The shape can be comprised in a single wall of the bag, or it can extend over the adjacent walls of the bag. In addition, a plurality of perforations may extend from the first end of the cut and a plurality of perforations may extend from the second end of the cut. The plurality of perforations may extend from the first end of the cut and from the second end of the cut about 5%, about 10%, about 15%, about 20%, about 25%, about 30%, about 35%, about 40% , about 45%, about 50%, about 55%, about 60%, about 65%, about 70%, about 75% > approximately 80% or approximately 85% > , approximately 90% > , approximately 95% > or approximately 99% of a distance through the front wall of the bag, the back wall of the bag, or a combination thereof, or may be extended to constitute a shape, including, but not limited to, a circle, a triangle, a square or a rectangle. Again, the shape can be included in a single wall of the bag, or it can extend over the adjoining walls of the bag.
The weakened area may also comprise a first
cut that has a first end and a second end and a second cut that have a first end and a second end. In particular embodiments, the first cut and the second cut intersect, for example, they comprise an "X" shape, or the first cut and the second cut comprises the parallel lines. The weakened area may further comprise a third cut, and the first cut, the second cut and the third cut are connected, for example, where the first cut, the second cut and the third cut comprise an "H" shape (or a "H" shape oblique to observe the bag with the upper end of the bag up). The weakened area may further comprise a plurality of perforations extending from the first end and the second end of the first cut, and a plurality of perforations extending from the first end and the second end of the second cut, where the plurality of perforations it penetrates through at least a portion of the front wall of the bag, the back wall of the bag, or a combination thereof. The plurality of perforations extending from the first end and the second end of the first cut and the plurality of perforations extending from the first end and the second end of the second cut may comprise the parallel lines or the intersecting lines. In various embodiments, the plurality of perforations may extend from the first end and the second end of the first cut and from the first end and the second end
of the second cut about 5%, about 10%, about 15%, about 20%, about 25%, about 30%, about 35%, about 40%, about 45%, about 50%, about 55%, about 60% about 65%, about 70%, about 75%, about 80%, about 85%, about 90%, about 95% or about 99% of a distance through the front wall of the bag, of the back wall of the bag, or a combination thereof.
The weakened area may alternatively comprise a plurality of perforations penetrating through at least a portion of the front wall of the bag, the back wall of the bag, or a combination thereof. The plurality of perforations can form a line extending about 5%, about 10%, about 15%, about 20%, about 25%, about 30%, about 35%, about 40%, about 45%, about 50% about 55%, about 60%, about 65%, about 70%, about 75%, about 80%, about 85%, about 90%, about 95% or about 99% of a distance through the front wall of the bag,
of the back wall of the bag, or of a combination thereof. The plurality of perforations may also constitute a shape, including, but not limited to, a circle, an oval, a triangle, a square or a rectangle. In other aspects, the plurality of perforations forms a first line and a second line, which may be approximately parallel and extend approximately 5%, approximately 10%, approximately 15%, approximately 20%, approximately 25%, approximately 30%, about 35%, about 40%, about 45%, about 50%, about 55%, about 60%, about 65%, about 70%, about 75%, about 80%, about 85%, about 90%, about 95% or about 15 99% of a distance through the front wall of the bag, the back wall of the bag, or a combination thereof. In addition, the weakened area may comprise a deformation in at least a portion of the front wall of the bag, the back wall of the bag, or a combination thereof. For example, the weakened area may comprise a split mark.

Detailed description of the invention
Referring first to Figure 1, the front side view of a 1 a bag modality is shown. The bag 1 a has a front wall 10, a rear wall 1 1, a first side wall 12, a second side wall 13, a
upper end 14, and a lower end 15. It will be evident, however, that the orientation of the ends 14 and 15 of the bag is unimportant and the references "top" and "bottom" are useful but may change depending on the orientation in which the bag is observed. As shown in Figure 1, the upper end 14 is considered a "flush cut" because the upper ends of the front wall 10 and the rear wall 1 1 are cut so that the upper ends of the wall front 10 and rear wall 1 1 are essentially "flush" with each other; they have substantially the same length. In addition, as shown in Figure 1, the lower end 15 is considered a "folded cut" because the lower end of the front wall 10 is longer than the lower end of the rear wall 1 1. The bag 1 a also comprises an easy opening feature 20 near the upper end 14 of the bag 1 a, which in this embodiment comprises a full cut 21 in a rectangular shape having a first end 21 a and a second end 21 ba through the front wall 10 of the bag 1 a, a first row of perforations 22 extending from the first end 21 a of the cut 21, a second row of perforations 23 extending from the second end 21 b of the cut 21, an optional third row of perforations 24 connecting the end of the first row of perforations 22 and the second row of perforations 23, a cover 25 over the cut 21 and the rows of
perforations 22, 23 and 24, and a flange 26 attached to the cover 25. Although in this embodiment the easy opening feature 20 is located near the upper end 14 of the bag 1 a and the flange is located near the second side wall 13 The person skilled in the art will understand that the easy opening feature 20 could also be in the opposite orientation, with the flange located closest to the first side wall 12, resides in any orientation near the lower end 15 of the front wall 10 of the bag 1 a, or resides in the orientation near the upper end 14 or the lower end 15 in the rear wall 1 1 of the bag 1 a. The complete cut 21 can be formed by drilling, cutting, or through the use of a laser, or by any other technique known to those skilled in the art. The easy opening feature 20 (in this embodiment the cut 21 and / or the first 22 and / or the second 23 row of perforations) provides a portion of the bag 1 to which it is weakened. This weakened portion can be opened with less force than required to open or tear other portions of the bag 1 a.
Bag 1 a can be opened by pulling tab 26, which removes cover 25 and bag portion 1 a defined by cut 21 and first, second, and third row of perforations 22, 23, and 24 , respectively. Although not shown in this embodiment, it is understood that the complete cut 21 may be larger or smaller, and that it may extend to a greater or lesser extent, and that the first and second rows of
perforations 22 and 23, respectively, can be extended at any distance from the first end and the second end, respectively, of the cut to the opposite side wall of the bag, for example 50%, 75%, 90% or approximately 100% 5 the distance from the ends of the cut to the opposite side of the bag. Furthermore, although not shown in this embodiment, the cover 25 can cover less than the full extent of the first and second row of perforations, at any distance the rows of perforations extend through the front wall of the bag, and in certain embodiments it covers only the entire portion of the cutout of the easy opening feature 20. The cover may comprise a polymer, a film, an adhesive, paper, or any combination thereof. Although not shown in Figure 1, the cut 21 and the first, the second 15, and the third row of perforations 22, 23, and 24 may comprise a first cover and a second cover, or a plurality of covers. In addition, the tab 26 may comprise the black and white and / or color printing (not shown), for example, a coupon (not shown), and may also be used to close the bag again.
Referring to Figure 2, the front side view of another embodiment of a bag 1 b is shown. The bag 1 b also has a front wall 10, a rear wall 1 1, a first side wall 12, a second side wall 13, a top end 25 for a flush cut 14, and a lower end of a folded cut 15.
bag 1 b also comprises an easy opening feature 20, which in this embodiment is near the lower end 15 of bag 1 b and comprises a full cut 21 in a triangular or carat form having a first end 21 a and a 5 second end 21 b with the front wall 10 of the bag 1 b, a first row of perforations 22 extending from the first end 21 a of the cut 21, a second row of perforations 23 extending from the second end 21 b of the cut 21 , an optional third row of perforations 24 which connects the end of the first row of perforations 22 and the second row of perforations 23, a cover 25 over the cut and rows of perforations, and a flange 26 attached to the cover 25.
Referring to Figure 3, the front side view 15 of another embodiment of a bag 1 c is shown. The bag 1 c also has a front wall 10, a rear wall 1 1, a first side wall 12, a second side wall 13, a top end of the flush cut 14, and a lower end of a folded cut 15. The bag 1 c also comprises a feature of easy opening 20 , which in this embodiment is near the upper end 14 of the bag 1 c and comprises a complete cut 21 in a semicircular shape having a first end 21 a and a second end 21 ba through the front wall 10 of the bag 1 c, a first row of perforations 22 extending
25 from the first end 21 a of the cut 21, a second row of
perforations 23 extending from the second end 21 b of the cut 21, an optional third row of perforations 24 connecting the end of the first row of perforations 22 and the second row of perforations 23, a cover 25 over the cut and 5 rows of perforations, and a flange 26 attached to the cover 25.
Referring to Figure 4, there is shown an alternate embodiment of a cover 25 and the flange 26, where the cover 25 is on the full cut 21 in a semicircular shape having a first end 21 a and a second end 21 b, but does not cover the full extent of the first row of perforations 22 and of the second row of perforations 23, and does not cover the third row of perforations 24. In this embodiment, the tab 26 includes instructions for opening the bag, but may also comprise 15 the printing in black and white and / or in color (not shown), for example, a promotional coupon (not shown).
Referring to Figure 5, the front side view of yet another embodiment of a bag 1 d is shown. The bag 1 d also has a front wall 10, a rear wall 1 1, a first side wall 12, a second side wall 13, an upper end of the flush cut 14, and a lower end of a folded cut 15. The bag 1 d also comprises an easy opening feature 20, which in this embodiment is close to the lower end 15 of the bag 1 d and comprises a complete cut 21 in
25 a rectangular shape having a first end 21 a and a

1 14a, the second side 103 having the reinforcing portion 1 14b, the seam 104, the upper end 105 and the lower end 1 10. The easy opening feature 120 is also shown, which in this embodiment is near the upper end 105 of the front wall 108 of the bag 100h and comprises a bidirectional full cut 121 in a square shape having a first end 121 a, a second end 121 b, a third end 121 c and a fourth end 121 through the front wall 108 of the bag 100h, a first row of perforations 122 extending from the first end 121a of the cut 121 through the front wall 108 and on the first side 102 of the bag 100h, a second row of perforations 123 which is extends from the second end 121 b of the cut 121 through the front wall 108 and on the first side 102 of the pouch 100h, an optional third row of perforations 124 connecting the end of the first row of perforations 122 and of the second row of perforations 123, a fourth row of perforations 122a extending from the third end 121 c of the cut 121 through the front wall 108 and on the second side 103 of the bag 100h, a fifth row of perforations 123a extending from the fourth end 121 of the cut 121 through the front wall 108 and on the second side 103 of the bag 100h, an optional sixth row of perforations 124a connecting the end of the fourth row of perforations 122a and the fifth row of perforations 123a, and a cover 127 on the cut 121 and a
small portion of the first row of perforations 122, the second row of perforations 123, the fourth row of perforations 122a and the fourth row of perforations 123a.
Referring to Figure 14, the rear side view of another embodiment of a "folded cut" bag is shown. As shown in Figure 14, the bag 10Oj has a first end 105 and a second end 1 10. It is useful to think of the first and second end 105 and 1 1 10 as the upper and lower end of the bag 100j, respectively. The bag 10Oj has a wall or a front surface 108, a wall or a rear surface 106, and two side walls 102 and 103. The bag 10Oj also has a seam 104 on the back side, or a wall or back surface. The seam 104 is produced when the bag 100 is formed using conventional methods known to those skilled in the art. Using such conventional methods, a material from which a 1 OOj bag will be formed (such materials are defined in greater detail below) are provided in a substantially flat sheet (refer to Figure 8 to Figure 13). The sheet is then directed and formed so that a portion of one side of the sheet is located on the other side of the sheet, as in the formation of a tube. The overlapping portions are then secured and sealed together, forming the seam 104. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that conventional techniques can be used to provide the side reinforcements in the bag 10Oj for each of the
sides 102 and 103 during this training process.
The lower part (as shown in Figure 14) of the first end 105 of the bag 10 Oj has the portions 1 12a and 1 12b of the front wall or surface 108 of the bag extending beyond the body of the bag. bag 10Oj that the portions 1 14a and 1 14b of the material of the bag 10Oj forming the lateral reinforcements for the sides 102 and 103. In addition, the portions 1 14a and 1 14b of the lateral reinforcements extend beyond the body of the bag 1 OOj that the upper end 17 17 of the rear wall 106 of the bag 100j. As shown in Fig. 14, the back wall of the bag 10Oj has an upper end 17 that does not extend as far from the body of the bag 10 Oj as the end portions 1 14a and 1 14b of the side or back reinforcements. the end portions 1 12a and 1 12b of the front wall 15 of the bag 10Oj.
Now referring to Fig. 15, a top side view of a "folded cut" bag 100k is provided. For ease of reference, the same numbers are used in the figures to denote the same characteristics of the 100k bag. As shown in Figure 15, the bag 100k comprises multiple layers of the materials 220, 222 and 224. The first layer 220 is preferably a woven polymeric material, such as polypropylene, polyester, high density polyethylene, or polyethylene. The woven plastic layer 220 can be formed from woven strips of
25 plastic manufactured from the film to provide great
resistance from relatively lightweight materials, and can also stretch to provide greater strength. For example, cross-laminated woven plastic film strips such as XF films are useful and commercially available from Valeron. Similarly, a biaxially oriented polypropylene plastic material is commercially available from AmTopp Division of Inteplast Group, Ltd. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that other materials, including various blends of polypropylene and polyethylene, can be used without departing from the scope of the invention.
Still referring to Figure 15, layer 222 is a coating or a lamination, preferably a polypropylene film. Layer 224 is preferably a polypropylene film oriented with reverse printing. The layer 224 may comprise the reverse printing of various labels, advertisements, warnings, and other information as may be desired, such as the cover 130 shown in Figure 15. Although not shown, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the upper side, the back side, and sides 102 and 103 of the bag 100 may contain images, patterns, or information as may be desired. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the reverse printing of layer 224 can be achieved with conventional techniques, and with several conventional plastic films. One advantage of printing the lower portion of the front and / or rear panel is the provision of the information that
It remains visible when the bag is on an exhibition shelf in a warehouse.
Still referring to Fig. 15, the underside (as shown in Fig. 15) of the bag 100k extends outwardly from the body of the bag 100k at the second end 10 of the bag 100k. As shown in Figure 15, the upper side of the bag 100k has an end portion 140 that extends along the width of the bag 100k. Each of the side reinforcements on the sides 102 and 103 of the bag 100k have the portions 142a and 142b that extend even further towards the second end 10 of the bag 100k than the end portion 140 of the upper side of the bag 100k. In addition, the lower side of the bag 100k has an end portion 110 extending beyond the end portions 142a and 142b of the side reinforcements. The end portion 10 of the bag 100k includes the portions 144a and 144b. As shown in Figure 15, the second end portion of the lower side of the bag 100k extends along the entire width of the bag 100k. Seam 104 is also shown.
Still referring to Figure 15, the exposed end portions 144a and 144b of the underside of the bag 100k can be covered with a durable glue. The glue can be applied to the selective surfaces, such as the portions 144a and 144b, or it can be applied in a line extending through the bottom side of the bag 100k along the second portion
extreme 1 10, which includes the portions 144a and 144b. After the glue is applied, the sides 102 and 103 of the bag 100 are preferably folded together with the bottom side of the bag 100k so that at least a portion of the inner surface of the bottom side of the bag 100k is extend over the upper surface of the upper side of the bag 100k. Preferably, the portions 142a and 142b of the side reinforcements will be bent and joined to the upper surface of the upper side of the bag 100k, as well as the portions 144a and 144b of the second end 1 10 of the lower side of the bag 100k. The coating then seals the second end 1 10 of the 100k bag together. The first end 105 of the bag 100k can be sealed in a similar manner, if desired. Alternatively, the first end 105 or the second end 10 of the 100k bag can be sealed using a hot melt technique or any other technique well known to those skilled in the art.
Referring now to Figure 16, a detailed cross-sectional view of an end portion of the bag 100 is provided. As shown in Figure 16, at least a portion of the front side 130 of the bag 100 is now covered. by means of the lower edge potion 1 10 of the back side of the bag 100, the extended portions 142a, 142b of the side 102 of the bag 100, as well as a portion of the front part 130 of the bag 100 including the end portion 140 Once these portions are folded, the heat and pressure can be applied
as appropriate to obtain and to ensure that the lower end 1 10 of the bag 100 is sealed in a durable manner, as with a conventional thermo-adhesive glue.
Once the bag 100 is sealed at one end, it can be filled with the desired materials. It has been found that a bag 100 with a height of 41 inches (104.1 cm) and a width of 28 inches (71 .1 cm) can durably contain at least about fifty (50) pounds (22.6 kg) of material without show undue stress, tearing, fracture or the like. It is believed that any bulk material may be contained in the bag 100, and the contents may weigh up to 100 pounds (45.3 kg), etcetera, without the undue risk of tearing or damage to the bag 100. Once the bag is filled 100, the second end needs to be sealed commonly. The second end of the bag 100 may be sealed in a similar manner as that described above for the lower end 1 10. Alternatively, the bag 100 may have its second end sealed by conventional means such as sewing. Still another method is to seal the second end of a shape like that described for the lower end 10 of the bag 100, and then to sew one of the two ends (not shown). Although not shown, those skilled in the art will understand and appreciate that a second end of the bag 100 can be sealed with conventional techniques once the
25 bag 100 has been filled with the selected amount of the material
wanted.
Referring now to Figure 17, an isometric view of the bag 1700 is provided. As shown in Figure 17, the bag 1700 includes a front panel 1701, a first side panel with the reinforcements 1709, a second side panel with the reinforcements (not visible in Figure 17), an upper end 1703, and a lower end 1705. The bag 1700 is a folded cut bag as previously described, with a folded upper cut end 1703 and a lower cut end folded 1705. The pouch 1700 preferably has the weakened area (not shown in Figure 17) or other easy opening feature on at least one surface (not shown in Figure 17). As shown in Figure 17, the bag 1700 has been filled and sealed and contains one or more materials. Although the contents of the 1700 bag may be food, animal feed, other bulk items, the content may also include liquids or mixtures. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the bag 1700, once formed in accordance with the present disclosure, can be filled and then the upper end 1703 or the lower end 1705 or both can be sealed as previously described. As shown in Fig. 17, the bag 1700, once it is filled, has a lower panel 1707 at the lower end 1705 thereof and an upper panel at the upper end thereof (not visible in Fig. 17). ). The 1700 bag can be stacked on top of
Similar or different bags, such as at a grocery store, pet store, or other display location, such that panel 1707 is easily visible to a consumer. As shown in Figure 17, front panel 1701, first side panel 1709 and lower panel 1707 includes printing (and may also include graphics), and the skilled person will appreciate that the upper panel, the rear panel, and the second side panel of the bag 1700, which are not visible in Figure 17, may also include graphics and / or printing. Thus, the 1700 bag has six discrete areas for printing and / or graphics, each formed by a discrete surface of the 1700 bag. In addition, the printing and / or graphics can be spread across more than one panel, or of any combination of six panels (not shown). Panel 1707 may include graphics and / or printing, so that a consumer can quickly, easily and easily identify the brand of contents in the bag, such as the brand of pet food therein if bag 1700 contains the pet food. Alternatively, or additionally, the printing or graphics on panel 1707 may contain information such as price, composition, expiration date, and the like. In another mode, panel 1707 may contain the printing or graphics that provide the coupon or other discount on the price or other offer, either in the contents of the 1700 bag or in some other product.
Referring to Figure 18, the front side view of a "flush cut" bag embodiment 1001 a is shown: Bag 1001 a has a front wall 1010, a rear wall 101 1, a first side wall 1012, a second side wall 1013, an upper end 1014, and a lower end
1015. It will be clear, however, that the orientation of the ends 14 and 15 of the bag is unimportant and the references "top" and "bottom" are useful but may change depending on the orientation in which the bag is observed. The bag 1001 a is considered a "flush cut" bag because the front wall 1010 and the rear wall 101 1 are cut so that the ends of the front wall 1010 and of the rear wall 101 1 are essentially "at ras "among themselves; they have substantially the same length. The bag 1001 a also comprises an easy opening feature 1030 comprising a cover 1019 next to the single sealed fold 1016 (in other embodiments this could be a double fold) at the lower end 1015 of the bag 1001 a. In this embodiment, the cover 1019 comprises a first cut 1031 through the cover 1019 having a first end 1031 a and a second end 1031 b, a second cut 1032 through the cover 1019 having a first end 1032a and a second end 1032b, and a third cut 1033 through the cover 1019 extending from the first cut 1031 to the second cut 1032. This particular orientation of the cuts is also referred to as a
"H" cut Although in this modality the "H" cut is located near the center of the cover 1019, the expert in the technician will understand that the "H" cut could be in any location along the cover , for example closer to the first side wall 1012 or to the second side wall 1013. The "H" cut may be formed by drilling, cutting, or through the use of a laser, or by any other technique known to those skilled in the art. The "H" cut provides a portion of the cover 1019 that is weakened This weakened portion can be opened with less force than that required to open or tear other portions of the cover 1019.
The bag 1001 a can be opened by pulling the portion of the cover 1019 at any (or both) end of the third cut 1033, which exposes a weakened area, for example, a cut, a series of perforations, or a marked line, in the front wall 1010 of the bag 1001 next to the single (or double) fold 1016 at the lower end 1015 of the bag 1001 a. This weakened portion can be opened with less force than that required to open or tear other portions of the bag 1001 a, including, but not limited to, the single (or double) sealed fold 1016. Although not shown in this embodiment, it will be understood that the first cut 1031 and / or the second cut 1032 may be larger or smaller, and may extend any distance from the first ends 1031 a and 1032 a and from the second ends 1031 b and 1032 b, respectively,
of the first 1031 and the second 1032 cut toward the opposite side walls of the bag, for example, covering 50%, 75%, 90% or approximately 100% of the distance from the third cut to opposite sides of the bag.
Referring to Figure 19, a front side view of another embodiment of a bag 1001 b is shown. The bag 1001 b also has a front wall 1010, a rear wall 101 1, a first side wall 1012, a second side wall 1013, an upper end of the flush cut 1014, and a lower end of the folded cut 1015. The bag 1001 b also comprises an easy opening feature 1020 comprising a cover 1019, which in this embodiment is near the lower end 1015 of the bag 1001 b and comprises a complete cut 1021 in a triangular or carat shape having a first end 1021 a second end 1021 ba through the cover 1019. The bag 1001 b can be opened by pulling the complete cut 1021 through the cover 1019, exposing a weakened area, e.g., a cut, a series of perforations, or a line marked on the front wall 1010 of the bag 1001 b.
