Abstract

A cost-effective starch/water-based binder composition and related method for forming sand cores and molds for foundries, wherein said binder is prepared by mixing starch and water in a proportion of about 10% to 30% by weight of starch, based on the mixture weight; and thereafter sand is mixed with the resulting aqueous starch solution/mixture in a proportion in the range of about 0.1 % to about 18% by weight based on the sand weight. The amount of starch in the final sand- binder mixture ("prepared sand") is within a maximum value of about 2 weight percent. A first portion of the starch may be used as indicated as part of the aqueous starch solution/mixture; with a separate starch portion, constituting the balance of up to the maximum 2 weight percent, being mixed in dry form with the sand before or together with the aqueous starch solution/mixture. The prepared sand has adequate fluidity and mechanical strength required for large scale production of cores and molds in conventional blown hot or cold box processes. The binder of the invention is highly competitive due to its low cost and effectiveness for forming sand cores and molds, being particularly effective for use in aluminum foundries for the automotive industry.
