Abstract
La presente invención describe un proceso para preparar partículas poliméricas, por ejemplo, partículas de poliestireno que pueden o no contener un agente de retención de agua y que requieren únicamente un proceso de una etapa para incorporar el agente de retención de agua. Las partículas poliméricas pueden prepararse por medio de un proceso de extrusión, o un proceso de polimerización volumétrica, en donde el agente de retención de agua se mezcla en el fundido polimérico. El agua se incorpora en las partículas enjuagándolas en agua caliente o fría o tratando las partículas con vapor durante un tiempo predeterminado dependiendo del contenido de agua deseado en las partículas. El agente de retención de agua puede ser almidón, zeolita, dióxido de sílice o poli(N-isopropil acrilamida) que oscilan de 0.1% a 10.0% en peso. Las partículas pueden expandirse por un medio apropiado para formar partículas pre-expandidas o expandidas de una manera convencional. Estas partículas poliméricas pueden usarse por los medios convencionales para producir un artículo y el artículo puede enjuagarse en agua caliente o fría o puede aplicarse vapor al artículo para introducir una cantidad deseada de agua en las partículas en el artículo y después expandirse por medio de aire caliente, vapor, etc., para formar un artículo polimérico de espuma.
