Abstract
The invention relates to a dual-wavelength birefringent filter characterised in that it can be used to select two frequency bands of an optical input signal having a bandwidth in excess of the filter response. The filter is formed by cascading multiple birefringent crystals, the lengths of which are whole multiples of the thinnest crystal, with polarisers therebetween. The polariser can be a physical polariser or can use propagation at the reflection polarisation angle known as Brewster's angle. The overall response of the filter can be tuned by changing the angle of all of the crystals perpendicularly to the propagation of the optical signal. The response of the two bands is achieved by aligning the angle of the thickest crystal such that the maximum of said crystal matches the minimum of the response of the other crystals. The spectral response is limited by the thinnest birefringent crystal and the separation of the two bands is determined mainly by the thickest crystal. The separa tion of the selected optical bands can be varied by changing the angle of the thickest crystals, thereby maintaining the matching condition between the transmission maximums and minimums.
