Abstract

La presente invención se refiere a un método para mejorar las propiedades de absorción de agua de una resina absorbente de agua, el cual comprende el tratamiento superficial de la resina absorbente de agua con una cantidad suficiente de una amina policuaternaria, para incrementar substancialmente la absorción de agua de dicha resina absorbente de agua. Un proceso para preparar una resina cruzada sólida absorbente de agua, el cual comprende: combinar una mezcla de monómero de (A) acrilato de potasio; (B) estireno y/o metacrilato de metilo en una cantidad del 0 al 25 por ciento basándose en la cantidad de acrialto computada basada en el peso del ácido acrílico; y (C) un monómero de polivinilo, con agua en una cantidad de por lo menos 30 por ciento en peso combinado de (A) más (B) más (C), basándose en el peso total de (A) más (B) más (C) más agua, para formar una mezcla de monómero caracterizada porque los monómeros de la mezcla de monómero consisten esencialmente en (A), (B) y (C); añadir un iniciador de polimerización a dicha mezcla de monóemro, copolimerizar dicha mezcla de monómero utilizando el calor exotérmico de reacción; y poner dicho copolímero de resina cruzada en contacto con una amina policuaternaria en una cantidad desde aproximadamente el 0.1 hasta aproximadamente el 5.0 por ciento basándose en el peso de dicho copolímero de resina cruzada.
