Chesapeake schools poised for new superintendent, but acting leader will stay for now (pilotonline.com) β Chesapeakeβs School Board has picked its next superintendent but will keep current leader Jared Cotton in place a bit longer while contract details are finalized. In the meantime, the board approved one-time $1,500 bonuses for qualifying Chesapeake Public Schools staff, aiming to boost retention and show appreciation despite relatively low starting teacher salaries compared with neighboring districts. 2. Great Bridge Bridge heat precautions: What Chesapeake is doing ahead of extreme temps (wtkr.com) β Chesapeake is closely monitoring the Great Bridge Bridge and readying water-cooling operations to keep it from overheating and getting stuck open again during this weekβs extreme heat. Public Works also plans bearing replacements by late 2026 or early 2027, which should improve how the spans open and close and may require future lane closures with advance notice to residents. Β Β Β
3. Chesapeake's Stallings called up by Brewers, set for MLB debut (wtkr.com) β A Chesapeake native and Grassfield High alum, pitcher Garrett Stallings has been called up by the Milwaukee Brewers and is poised for his Major League debut. After several seasons in the minors, including time with Norfolk, heβs earned the promotion with a strong 2026 showing in Triple-A, giving local fans a new hometown player to follow in the big leagues. 4. New flyover clears path for safer landfill access (suffolknewsherald.com) β A new flyover to the SPSA regional landfill in Suffolk is now open, improving safety and traffic flow for trash trucks serving Chesapeake and other member localities. Officials say the long-planned project should reduce delays and protect long-term disposal capacity for the communities that rely on SPSAβs system. Β Β Β
