Little Big Guns Never Tire (Part 2)

Big bada_boom! - but with five barrels blasting off simultaneously.

"Let 'em get a bit closer..."

Yes,  a classic Organ Gun from the early 1990s. I prefer this version over the plastic kit.  Even though it is mostly wooden versus the current solid metal style.  It just has more character and has a cool feel to it. Also, unlike the cannons, I  felt that I could paint the the wooden areas to match the army's color.

Painted wood.

I like it like the,, but I thought it needed something more. While digging around in one of my old catalogs the (2004-2005 to be specific) I was thrilled and inspired upon spotting this picture:

Hats off for Colin Dixon!

It's Colin Dixon's version of this classic Organ Gun with a banner top added to the front of it. And it just so happened I had that piece as well. I just had to copy this simple conversion. Also, hats off to Mr. Dixon for basing his war machine way back then. I always thought the war machines looked better on bases and I was glad to see The Old World game* move forward with this.

Banner top added with copper basecoat.

I also like the gold trim he used as well, and decided that the warm copper/gold color looks more striking than the cold color of the pewter/silver.

These next two pictures show one of the crew half-way through with being painted. In particular I wanted to show off the Wyldwood Contrast Paint on the barrel. It looks great and I don't think i will ever go back to...whatever I was doing to get a worked wood effect before. Wyldwood wins it!

Once I was done with the artillery piece, I enhanced the gun barrels using Abaddon Black.

After this came the grass tufts to finish the whole thing off.

Backsides.

Yes, I do like how this turned out. The crewman waiving the helm around has a stripped outfit but everything I attempted to paint those stripes I hated the results. So ultimately I just kept his outfit a single color.

And that's it really. Now I just need to get this thing into action!

"Cheerio!"

Reigniting Old Grudges (Battle Report)

"Come and get it!"

Once again The Bob and I convened to conduct a battle in The Old World. This time he chose to play High Elves and I decided to finally introduce my Dwarfs to a battlefield. A classic grudge fight indeed. Bob and I like to set up battlefields that look like battlefields but at the same time seem to also be fair with the cover and higher terrain. Of course with Fantasy we have to also keep it sparse and open so that there is room to fight.

The battlefield.

The Dwarfs muster and review their books of grudges.

We are playing Pitch Battle, and after the roll-off I deployed first, and we took it in turn with placing our units, I finished first which gave me a +1 one on the "who goes first" roll-off. I ended up going first.

High Elf Deployment.

Dwarf Deployment.

TURN ONE.

The Dwarfs were too far out to hit anything and the cannon missed.

The High Elves moved up, and repositioned their units while peppering the Thunderers with arrows from the Seaguard and the Bolt Thrower. A few of the Thunderers fell to this cowardly assault, and they shouted defiant curses at the treacherous elves.

The dwarfs take casualties from shooting.

TURN TWO

Stymied by the High Elf maneuvers the Dwarfs struggled to get into position for either a charge or for shooting. The cannon missed again sadly, but at least now I was getting used to how to use the thing. None of their other shooting managed to eliminate any Elves as the crafty bastards kept making their saves!

The High Elves brought the fight to the dwarfs with the Silver Helms crashing into the Thunderers. Much to my surprise the Thunderers were not killed outright nor did they break. Again, we marveled at how the mounts out-performed their riders.

The Silver Helms charge!

TURN THREE

The Dwarfs start out Turn 3 with a pile of dead and no defeated High Elves to show for their efforts. This was about to change. Finally, the cannon hits the Sea Guard killing three of them. The Queen and the Warriors with the two-handed weapons charge the White Lions, Queen Helga issues a challenge to the High Elf Army General, and she manages to fell the High Elf leader in single combat. Despite this awesome event, the unit over-all was out-fought by the White Lions who won his combat. Thanks to Queen Helga's Leadership they did not break.

Killer Queen.

Not at all stymied by the Dwarfen turn of luck, the High Elves pressed their advantage and continued with their assault. The Phoenix Guard charged into the Thane who was joined with the Warriors with Hand Weapons and Shields. The Thane Challenged the Phoenix Guard Champion to a fight but he wimped out and hid behind the cloaks of his men. Perhaps they were demoralized by that cowardly act, but the Phoenix Guard lost that combat but they did not break. Ok, in reality the 1.5 FAQ that helps out infantry, particularly those fighting with sword and shield, was really the decider here.

The Phoenix Guard fall (worry not,, they'll rise from the ashes).

Despite that win for the dwarfs, the rest of the turn all bad news for them. The Silver Helms finally finish off the Thunderers, and the Warrios with th e double-handed weapons were wiped out. Queen Helga, now on here own, failed her break test and was ran down by the White Lions. That event alone has earned the High Elves a page in the Book of Grudges.

TURN FOUR

Oh, not a happy sight for the Dwarfs is it? Clearly the field is being controlled by the High Elves at this point. I tried in vain to get the Iron Drakes into a position which would allow them to be in this game somehow. The Ironwarden did kill a Seaguard with a Troll Hammer Torpedo, but the rest of his lads were out of range. In an act of desperation, the cannon crew fired grapeshot into the approaching White Lions and they actually managed to kill one of them. Pressured by his men, the Phoenix Guard Champion accepted the challenge from the Thane and, as he feared, was slain.

Not looking good foe the dwarfs.

The White Lions charge the Cannon, and amazingly, one of the crew takes one of the Lions out. It was all in vain though as the White Lions utterly destroyed the cannon and the crew in return.

Battle foe the battery.

And the Thane with his unit of Warrior wipe out the Phoenix Guard.

TURN Five

When the Thane looked about he saw that this battle was a disaster. Both of the armies had lost their leaders but the High Elves had many more units still capable and strong. Both armies fired at each other but the few casualties inflicted failed to make a difference.

Fire fight!

With the dead leader bonuses added, the banners collected, and the dead tallied up, it was a strong victory for the High Elves 764 points to my....well, damn, I didn't record the score for the Dwarfs but it was no where near the High Elf score.

So what went wrong with the Dwarfs? Mostly my inexperience with them. That 3 Movement is a serious factor against them and I think you have to really pick a point on the battlefield as you start deploying that you are going to defend to the death and just take it. They are not good at maneuvering and none of them have an Open Order formation to assist them. The Irondrakes felt this the most as they were put down to counter the High Elf Calvary who, wisely, were not about to just charge into those waiting guns, As a result they spent much of the game just trying to get into a position where they could participate in the battle. My in experience with the cannon was also on display here but at least I didn't blow it up! The Queen was a rock star, and if it weren't for my failing that break test I think she would have cut down more of the White Lions. My MVP was clearly the Warrior with the hand weapons and shield, they were just stellar. As much as I want to change a few elements of this list, I do think half the battle was lost for me at deployment, so I want to give this list a second shake before I revamp it.

As for the High Elves, Bob played them very well, and I don't think there is anything he did I would do differently. It's a dice game after all, and they have a way of confounding the most perfect of plans, but this time the High Elves overcame the odds and pulled out a solid win.  But it is worth noting that for the second game in a row, we both saw the Bolt Thrower perform better than the internet says it should. Perhaps they're not using it right? Regardless, the temptation to get one for my dwarfs is indeed very strong.

All-in-all it was a fun game! We hope you enjoyed this report, and we hope to get another one played soon.

"There's another one, fire!!!"

Miners Report! (Part 1)

This is the final unit of painted dwarfs from the collection I bought last summer. The models in the collection were all from the Battle for Skull Pass WFB 7th ed starter box and they were all painted.  And painted kind of strangely.  Clearly their original owner was a big fan of metallic paints as all of these models were coated in them. But this unit of Miners is probably the strangest unit as they're painted in a metallic purple color.

Miners painted by an unknown person.

I doubt there is any part of these models I won't paint over.  In fact I am looking forward to doing away with that attempt at blood that has been painted onto their pick-axes. At least, I think that is what it's supposed to be...?

Pickaxe for the Blood God!

While I was prepping those models for their inevitable revamp, I picked up a box of the current TOW edition of the miners and built most of the box in about a day.  This was because I was stuck in a hotel room and assembling these guys was a fine way to pass the time. That was back in the Spring, and now at the start of Fall, I tinkered with them again, finishing them off with extra bits such as backpacks, blasting charges, and additional equipment. Those guys are now primed and waiting for me to get started on their paint jobs.

Lighting the way, like a champion.

I had the idea to make a marker to indicate whether or not I have purchased blasting charges for a unit of Miners. This is represented by a wheelbarrow loaded up with TNT and a stack of blasting charges. I think I will make a few more of these for the Miner units I will likely end up with.

The runes translate to 'acme'.

Then came time to construct the mine markers (as described in the Dwarf Mountin Hold Arcane Journal).  This first one was made from the current miners kit.

It's tall and loaded with details.

Contrasting that we have the markers from the Blood Pass 7th ed starter which  work nicely as well.

This last one I made from  bits left over from the dwarf cannons I built recently.

I also bought this 3-D printed terrain piece to go with these guys. It's a mine entrance. I thought it was perfectly suited and will look good when painted up and set up on the table. When it's paint job is done that is.

A shaft to protect.

This thread will chroncile my work on these dwarf miners over time. Hopefully not a long time, but we'll see.

Little Big Guns Never Tire (Part 1)

Behold, a completed battery of dwarfen cannons! May the grudges be settled with gun powder and thunder!

Cannon #1.

This first cannon is a repaint. It's part of that set that I got last summer and decided to just paint over the existing paint.

Each of these cannons and crew are matched up by the stuff on their bases. This set of models has nothing extra on their bases, just a few grass tufts and a few pinches of static grass .

The crew were probably the least outlandish of the used dwarfs that I painted over. So much so that I apparently never took a "before" pic. The engineer had a metallic beard and I decided I like it. An ink wash was the only thing I did to it and I was happy with he result.

Cannon #2

Crew #2 and #3 were both bought from a long gone bitz seller that used to have a big bitz store on eBay about 20 years ago. It was a cheap way to build up squads and these Skull Pass cannons were going  for "cheap" back when they were part of the current starter set. After years of neglect it was finally time to get these thing built and painted

Skulls are what sets this group apart from the others. Each miniature has a skull on it's base. In addition to that the cannon also has an ammo trolly (I think that's what it's called?) carrying some wicked looking cannon shells.

I used a few different schemes on the flesh of the crew to create not just a sense of diversity but also to establish a bit of individualism.

Cannon #3

The models in this set all have large chunks of building debris on their bases to tie them all to each other.

The cannon has a telescopic range finder as well. I don't think there were ever any rules or benefits for having this with your models, other than the rule of cool.

This is probably my favorite set of crewmen and I am just pleased with how they turned out, especially the engineer. I'm thinking about adding some fallen leaves to some of these bases just give them a bit more kick. I'm going to think on that for a bit longer though.

And there we have it, a battery of cannons waiting for their opportunity to get into a battle where they can humble me with MISFIRES and low Damage rolls Actually, that's typical game for me so...

"Wait!" I hear you say with a hint of confusion in your voice, "If they're done, why is this a Part 1?"
Ah, glad you asked. You see there is a fourth war machine, one that isn't a cannon, that I worked on alongside these things, that deserves a post all on it's own. Look for that in the near (ish) future!

Thunder Struck! (Part 2)

It was a bit of a grind, but I finally got to a point where I can declare that these guys are DONE.

I neglected to take stage-by-stage/ work-in-progress shots as I went along mainly because ai dabbled on these guys here and there since the previous post.  This dabbling took place randomly between work on some of the other miniatures that I completed during that time.

Which leaves me with these snazzy glamor shots instead. I hope no one minds. If you want to know more about this scheme check out the Dwarf Warriors posts and the post that details the single test model I did also.

The leadership.

Oh, and check out those leaves! I ordered some leaves for scale modeling from Amazon. These are great for adding a touch of realism to models such as these.

And I suppose that's all I can say about them at this time. I think they turned out well considering their original state that they were in when I got them.

Another unit painted, more to go!
