The Woman King (2022)

“We are the spear of victory, we are the blade of freedom, we are Dahomey! ” – Nanisca

Number of Times Seen – 1 (28 Nov 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A group of female warriors led by their king try to stop slavers from taking their people as slaves in the early 1800’s.

My Take on it – This is a film that i felt had much more potential than realized. The premise is great, but they get bogged down with the action scenes instead of developing the characters on more than a superficial level. Viola Davis is superb in the title role, but even her character feels limited. The action scenes are great and they get the choreography right, but overall, this film feels lacking in far too many aspects which is a shame.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – While the Agojie are very much real–they existed for over a century–they also have inspired plenty of interpretations in pop culture, perhaps most notably the Dora Milaje in Black Panther. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
