The Comedian (1957)

This a Covid-19 2021 minireview!

“You know who I thought it was? I thought it was Walt Disney wanting you to play one of the dwarves. The one they called Stupid. ” – Sammy Hogarth

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Aug 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A famous comedian acts one way on screen, but shows a very different version of himself off screen.

Bottom Line – This is a film that I heard was superb and was quite eager to finally see what it was all about. Mickey Rooney is amazing in the lead role and manages to play both ‘versions’ of this characters personality so well that they both come across as being so believable. The story shows that one can never really judge someone who shows his celebrity in public, because one never truly knows as to whether this is his true self or not. The film’s dialogue is great and adds so much to the realism of how things play out. I wish that they would have delved even deeper into the main character’s personality because that would have made things even more fascinating.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to a behind the scenes documentary on the production, one day, Jack Benny wandered into a rehearsal of a scene where Mickey Rooney has to belittle costar Mel Tormé. Benny actually tried to break up the “argument”, not knowing they were just reciting dialog. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
