Number of Times Seen – 2 (Theater in ’93 and 9 Jul 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A young black teenager decides to try and find her real father who it turns out is from a sperm donor and white.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing when it came out in theater.
The pairing of Whoopie Goldberg and Ted Danson at the time seemed like a great idea since both were still in the prime of their popularity.
Unfortunately, the two of them have terrible chemistry in this film and nothing that they do seems to come across as good or even funny; (which is a shame since this is a comedy).
The premise itself has a bit of merit yet the way that it is presented is atrocious and doesn’t work at all.
The one standout in this film is a very young Will Smith who has a really funny scene in a doctor’s office but besides that, this film has very little to offer in ways of laughter and poignancy.
This film tries to deal with racial differences in a humorous manner yet doesn’t manage to give us enough scenes that are funny since most are quite pathetic.
This is a film that truly isn’t memorable at all and I hope that I will soon forget the rest of it because it’s far from being entertaining at all.
Bottom Line – Terrible film that just doesn’t work at all. Danson and Goldberg have no real chemistry together whatsoever which takes away from caring about what will happen. Smith is the standout in a small role yet has a great scene in a doctr’s office. Te idea to try and tackle racial differences via humor is actually an interesting one, yet here they don’t seem to manage to make it work and instead it comes across as pathetic instead of funny. There is really nothing in this film that is memorable at all and I hope to forget everything I still do recall quite soon.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson met and eventually dated after finishing this movie. Their relationship lasted up until 1994. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
