about

Maloca is proud to present SIIIX Volume 2, the follow-up to last year’s release initiated by veteran Netherlands-based ensemble HIIIT (formerly Slagwerk Den Haag) and developed alongside a select group of six forward-thinking producers. Once again, HIIIT opens up its extensive collection of percussion instruments, offering up a vast and dynamic sample bank of drum recordings to a cluster of hand-picked, rhythmically-focused artists.

Leading the charge, Frank Wienk (Binkbeats) and the rest of the collective mark their return to Maloca with a new cadre of commissioned sonic practitioners selected by HIIIT: underground mainstays Grischa Lichtenberger, Rrose and Zoë Mc Pherson join forces with Jakarta’s Uwalmassa, Cairo’s 3PHaz and Berlin-based Ale Hop for a fully international sonic exchange. Tracks were sent back and forth between HIIIT and the producers in the form of a digital dialogue, with additional, track-specific percussion recordings weaved into the compositions by HIIIT.

Tumbling between timbres, hues, and tempos, this second volume is as eclectic as its predecessor. From 3Phaz’s hyperactive, bright drum workouts to Ale Hop’s cascades of woozy, ASMR-like percussion and Grischa Lichtenberger’s sterile, staccato-sharp clatterings, each contribution brings a distinct sonic signature and pulse. Rrose and Zoë Mc Pherson steer the release into murkier depths with two cinematic slices of weighty, chugging techno, while Uwalmassa crafts a hypnotic dialogue of spacey call-and-response between liquified mallet tones and crystalline textures.

The release is united by a shared palette of organic drum recordings taken from HIIIT’s extensive percussion collection, a shared dialogue with the collective, and a mutual fascination with percussion. This project is a testament to the evolving conversation between HIIIT and the artists, with an emphasis placed squarely on collaboration at every stage of the creative process.
