I love horror films, especially the paranormal sub-genre, and Grave Encounters is the newest on the list of impressive low budget indie films. The premise is very similar to something like House On Haunted Hill, people go into a house, or in this case a mental asylum to investigate paranormal happenings and things get nasty.
Grave Encounters isn't original in any way, while watching it I was thinking "oh I've seen that happen in this movie or that movie" , it seems to have taken a lot of factors from a lot of other paranormal horror movies and rolled them all into one which I thought was excellent, the fact that it's not overly original isn't a bad thing at all, Hollywood isn't well known for it's originality, it uses formulas that have worked well before in a non direct wAy. The pacing of the scares is great, it's slowly built up so that its more intense when there finally is a genuine scare, I hate when horror movies just have cheap scares just to try and keep people interested, this movie builds tension so well, I was in the edge of my seat most of the time. The asylum where the film is set is terrifying, the whole place just has an overwhelming sense of dread, it's the last place I would ever want to spend the night.
The acting is rather decent, except for a few times when the lead male had me cringing, the dude who plays the "psychic" is awesome, he brought a little bit of a comic edge which was nice.
So yeah, not the most original horror film but it still delivers genuine thrills, if you're a horror fan I doubt you'll see a better paranormal horror this year. To me it was like Blair Witch with a dab of Yellow Brick Road and a sprinkle of House On Haunted Hill.
Highly recommended, just don't expect lots of originality.

I am a sophisticated adult. I have seen thousands of movies. I can watch zombies, vampires, serial killers, sharks, alligators. Snakes, demons, live beheadings without batting an eye. But holy crap this movie scared the bejeesus out of me to the point of having to pause it, going for a walk and a drink to calm down, before resuming watching. This is serious blood curdling stuff. You have been warned.
GRAVE ENCOUNTERS starts out as a parody of those "ghost hunter" reality shows, complete with an overly-dramatic host, a psychic, and an occult expert. The humor comes from the raw, unedited footage, where the stars mock and condemn the fakery of their own show.
The real fun begins when these same paranormal investigators take a film crew into an abandoned, supposedly haunted mental institution. After having themselves locked in for the night, our fearless adventurers settle in for what they expect to be a long, dull evening.
What follows is a slowly-spiraling descent into terror, madness, and death.
The best part of ENCOUNTERS is its midsection, which is nearly perfect in its tense buildup. By comparison, the finale is abrupt and a bit of a buzzkill. Still, as "found footage" films go, it's a damned good one.
As with most such films, it's best viewed in total darkness...

I watch horror movies on a weekly basis and frankly I have grown tired of all the latest trends in horror films. Most of them consist of two hours of screaming while attractive, hormonally-charged young students get brutally tortured by disfigured hillbillies. Yawn. The 'cringe' factor is not entertainment. Who wants to spend money on a movie you can't bare to watch?
Geared with low expectations and a bowl of popcorn I decided to give Grave Encounters a go. Anticipating a minimal scare factor,I didn't think twice about watching it by myself. However, as the film progressed I started locking doors, switching on lights and making arbitrary phone calls to take the edge off. The combination of hand-held camera work, limited lighting and incredibly frightening ghosts had me looking over my shoulder for hours after watching it.
Surprisingly the unfamiliar actors and actress had me gripped in a tense and realistic chasm of emotions, especially Ashleigh Gryzko's believable performance. This film has the cinematographic suspense of Paranormal Activity 3 and will leave you on the edge of your seat up until the very end.
Give it a try... go on.

Solid Concept
The movie is one of them found footage horror flicks. It's kind of like when YouTubers make a video about exploring an haunted building and records it. It's pretty much this film except they're filming for a show called Grave Encounters. They explore an haunted asylum and capture the footage of ghost activity. Except things go wrong for the worse cause the ghost will never let them leave. I enjoyed the film but there are problems with it. My opinion: when people die, I couldn't tell if they died because the deaths happened off screen and there's barely blood around. And it just seemed rushed and things are slow as well. And the ending was just...What? But I did enjoy the film and it was a solid concept

- TriviaThe show format and lead role draw influence from real life show Ghost Adventures (2008) and the series lead Zak Bagans who is known for his black muscle shirts and technique of trying to invoke ghost presence by cussing at the supposed specters and inviting attacks.
- GoofsAs the history of the asylum is revealed, it is stated that a former doctor performed grisly experiments on the asylum patients in the 1930s. In a flashback sequence referring to this time, a patient is shown in front of a television, watching static. However, the television was not introduced to the public until the 1939 World's Fair, and was not common in US households until the early 1950s. An asylum in the 1930s could not, and would not, have had a television.
- Quotes
Lance Preston: This place is about as haunted as a sock drawer.
- Crazy creditsAt the end of the credits, a message reads: "No Rats Were Eaten During The Making of this Film".
- Alternate versionsYears after the film's release, the Vicious Brothers released an alternate ending scene. In the original ending, Kenny returned at 6 am and found Lance in a patient's room acting strange with the camera. Kenny calls the police to report the crew missing, and it is revealed there is now an ongoing investigation into the incident. The scene cuts to a psychiatric hospital where a neurologist explains Lance was somehow lobotomized and was now unable to care for himself. Finally, Lance is shown to be a patient with a shaven head and is unable to speak full sentences. When he's told that he's being filmed as part of the investigation, he breaks into a violent outburst saying he never wants to be on camera again.
