The Zootopia sequel collected $8.8 million on its eighth weekend at the box office in North America. Despite losing 100 theaters, the film declined by only 12.3% from last weekend domestically.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is coming in behind expectations as the sole new wide entry at the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday box office, where holdover Avatar: Fire and Ash will win the four-day weekend.

Sony’s The Bone Temple is looking to notch $15 million during the four-day frame, and a $13 million three-day number. That’s far behind the first 28 Years, which opened to a $30 million three-day number in June, and behind the $20 million four-day number projected for Bone Temple going into the weekend.

Avatar 3, now in its fifth weekend, is expected to win with a $17 million four-day figure. So far, the film has collected $353.4 million domestically and more than $1.23 billion globally.

“Zootopia 2” is hopping to another box office milestone.

Disney’s hit sequel has earned $1.7 billion globally, overtaking another hit Disney sequel, 2024’s “Inside Out 2” ($1.69 billion), to stand as Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film in history. China’s “Ne Zha 2,” a non-Motion Picture Association release, remains the biggest animated movie with $2.25 billion.

With these box office heights, “Zootopia 2” is now the ninth-biggest global release of all time, ranking behind two superhero juggernauts, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($1.9 billion) and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($2 billion).

Josh Safdie and Timothee Chalamet have set a new box office record at A24 with their acclaimed thriller “Marty Supreme,” which on its fourth weekend in wide release has passed Best Picture Oscar winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to become the distributor’s highest grossing film ever.

The film is projected to earn $6.6 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, pushing its domestic total past $80 million. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” grossed $77.1 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2022.

India’s Collective Artists Network has rolled out its inaugural content slate through HistoryVerse, with stories drawing from Indian mythology and history.

The outfit has revealed eight titles spanning theatrical features and streaming series under Collective Studios, the firm’s newly established unified production entity consolidating original content development across its platforms.

The projects draw inspiration from prominent figures and traditions in Indian mythology and history, including Hanuman, Krishna, Shiva, Shivaji, Durga, Kali, and Swami Samarth. The previously released AI-powered “Mahabharat” series serves as the initial entry in HistoryVerse’s long-term strategy for adapting culturally-rooted material for contemporary audiences.

Among the newly announced titles, three are being packaged as theatrical releases while two will be formatted as series, with additional projects currently in various development phases. The productions are being designed to deliver scale and immersive detail across their narratives. The slate aims to reach audiences across multiple demographics and territories.

One can admire the makers of 1992's "X-Men: The Animated Series" for their gall. The world of X-Men, as it appears in Marvel Comics, is vast and complicated, involving hundreds of characters and decades of soap opera-like drama that even deep-cut fans have trouble following. The makers of "The Animated Series" elected to throw viewers into the deep end, trusting that kids would be able to keep track of the show's dozen main characters. Also, they didn't dramatically change the designs of the X-Men, allowing them to look just as silly in the cartoon as they do on the page. Specifically, they looked like the way Jim Lee designed them a few years earlier.

Movie audiences are often only willing to watch love stories in particular contexts. As a dash of spice thrown into a genre movie they're generally welcomed. As a feature of a gritty prestige drama, they're typically lauded. And within the confines of the romantic comedy (despite whichever side the emphasis is placed), they're appreciated. Yet the romantic fantasy film, especially if it happens to be particularly earnest, is often derided.

Timothy Busfield will be edited out of the upcoming Amazon MGM film “You Deserve Each Other” after he was accused of groping a 7-year-old boy on the set of “The Cleaning Lady,” Variety had learned.

This is the second project involving Busfield to be affected in the wake of his sexual abuse allegations. On Jan. 12, NBC pulled an episode of “Law & Order: Svu” that guest-starred Busfield from its schedule. The episode was set to debut on Jan. 22.

On Jan. 9, an arrest warrant was issued against Busfield on two counts of sexual abuse involving a minor. The investigation stems from twin boys who appeared on the TV series “The Cleaning Lady” in 2022. Busfield was the director at the time.

A24‘s “Marty Supreme,” a sports dramedy starring Timothée Chalamet as a fictional table tennis champ, has surpassed $100 million globally. It’s the fourth A24 release to ever cross this box office milestone after 2022’s Oscar best picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” ($142 million), 2024’s dystopian thriller “Civil War” ($127 million) and last year’s romantic drama “Materialists” ($107 million). This benchmark is especially impressive because it’s been a challenging time for arthouse releases; “Marty Supreme” and “Materialists” were 2025’s only independent films to generate above $100 million.

Thanks to Chalamet’s unconventional marketing efforts and glowing word-of-mouth from critics and audiences, “Marty Supreme” has earned $102.3 million worldwide, including $80.8 million in the United States and $21.5 million overseas. Top international markets include the United Kingdom with $16 million, Canada with $5.7 million and Mexico with $944,000.

Steve Buscemi has been in some of the best and most acclaimed TV shows and movies released in modern times, ranging from "Broadwalk Empire" to "Fargo" (and also "The Boss Baby"). He even played a memorable role in "The Sopranos" that forever changed his career trajectory. Subject Matter, an organization that provides funds and resources to nonprofits and documentary films highlighting urgent social issues, will award $120,000 in grants at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

Recipients include Sharon Liese’s investigative thriller “Seized,” the nonprofit organization Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Dawn Porter’s “When A Witness Recants,” and the nonprofit Gideon’s Promise, each receiving $30,000.

Singer Yulee Choi wasn’t the only one making her acting debut in the comedy “Food Truck: Stolen Love…and Moo Deng.” The viral pygmy hippo who charmed the world after she was born in 2024 also appears in a feature film for the first time in the Thai family movie.

Choi, a Korean singer-songwriter and founder of Srp Entertainment, told the audience at a recent Variety Screening Series event that she wanted to make the jump into acting because “I love to learn.” When the producers learned she could speak Thai (she majored in Thai at university), they encouraged her to join the film. It co-stars popular Thai actor Mario Maurer along with comedian Jack Fanchan and rapper-actor Padung Songsang.

Her song “After the Rain” is also heard in the film, and she explained in the Q&a how the song, which was released last year, ties in with “Food Truck.

After Paramount’s 2023 “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” featured Peru extensively, interest in the South American country spiked, particularly in the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, the colonial city of Cusco and the Peruvian Amazon, which formed key backdrops to the latest in the franchise. But Peru is keen to show off its lesser known and much underrated sites.

“Machu Picchu is one of our flagship attractions, but it is not the only one. We have many other outstanding destinations: Arequipa, of course, but also Kuélap and Ayacucho, among others. What we are seeking is diversification, and promoting Peru as a filming destination plays a key role in helping us diversify and showcase the richness of our country beyond a single site,” says Maria del Sol Velasquez, director of Peru’s tourism body, PromPeru, which remains the country’s de facto film commission.

International sales agency Pluto Film has picked up Paul Negoescu’s “Atlas of the Universe,” which explores the fragile shift from childhood innocence to early independence. The Romanian-Bulgarian co-production is set for its world premiere in the Berlinale’s Generation K+ program.

“Atlas of the Universe” is a road movie following 10-year-old Filip (played by Matei Donciu), who sets off across the countryside after accidentally buying two right foot shoes. “What begins as a simple mission becomes an unexpected journey of courage, persistence, friendship and self discovery,” Pluto said.

The film is produced by Radu Stancu and Ioana Lascar of deFilm and written by Mihai Mincan and Negoescu.

And while this does signify the inevitability of death, "Game of Thrones" itself still racked up a ridiculous body count (6000+ deaths!), underlining the gruesome nature of life in Westeros. Nikolaj Arcel is preparing My Fairytale Life, a biopic of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, with TrustNordisk boarding sales ahead of next month’s European Film Market.

Arcel will re-team with Anders Thomas Jensen to write the film, with the pair having previously written 2023’s The Promised Land.
