Zootopia 2 by Disney is not backing down, even though it is on the verge of completing sixty days at the cinemas. ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Falls to ‘Avatar 3’ with Soft $15M MLK Weekend Opening
Ralph Fiennes, Alfie Williams, Jack O'Connell, Chi Lewis-Parry, and Erin Kellyman in 28 ans plus tard: Le temple des morts (2026)
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is coming in behind expectations as the sole new wide entry at the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday box office, where holdover Avatar: Fire and Ash will win the four-day weekend.

Sony’s The Bone Temple is looking to notch $15 million during the four-day frame, and a $13 million three-day number. That’s far behind the first 28 Years, which opened to a $30 million three-day number in June, and behind the $20 million four-day number projected for Bone Temple going into the weekend.

Avatar 3, now in its fifth weekend, is expected to win with a $17 million four-day figure. So far, the film has collected $353.4 million domestically and more than $1.23 billion globally.

The 28 Years Later franchise hails from director Boyle and writer Alex Garland, who brought the film series to Sony after a heated bidding war. Filmmaker Nia DaCosta is in the director’s chair for Bone Temple,...

‘Zootopia 2’ Surpasses ‘Inside Out 2’ as Hollywood’s Highest-Grossing Animated Film of All Time With $1.7 Billion
Jason Bateman, Bonnie Hunt, Danny Trejo, Idris Elba, Ginnifer Goodwin, Don Lake, Raymond S. Persi, Ke Huy Quan, Shakira, Patrick Warburton, Nate Torrence, Andy Samberg, Josh Dallas, Fortune Feimster, and Quinta Brunson in Zootopie 2 (2025)
“Zootopia 2” is hopping to another box office milestone.

Disney’s hit sequel has earned $1.7 billion globally, overtaking another hit Disney sequel, 2024’s “Inside Out 2” ($1.69 billion), to stand as Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film in history. China’s “Ne Zha 2,” a non-Motion Picture Association release, remains the biggest animated movie with $2.25 billion.

With these box office heights, “Zootopia 2” is now the ninth-biggest global release of all time, ranking behind two superhero juggernauts, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($1.9 billion) and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($2 billion).

“This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said in a statement. “We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Yvett Merino and the entire team at Walt Disney Animation Studios for creating a film that connects so deeply with audiences everywhere. ‘Zootopia 2’ is an extraordinary achievement,...

‘Marty Supreme’ Becomes A24’s Highest Grossing Film at Domestic Box Office

Josh Safdie and Timothee Chalamet have set a new box office record at A24 with their acclaimed thriller “Marty Supreme,” which on its fourth weekend in wide release has passed Best Picture Oscar winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to become the distributor’s highest grossing film ever.

The film is projected to earn $6.6 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, pushing its domestic total past $80 million. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” grossed $77.1 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2022.

Overseas, “Marty Supreme” is just getting started with releases in a few countries and is expected to roll out to other markets over the coming weeks after...

Task Season 2 Is The Perfect Opportunity For A Major HBO Crossover
Image
Behind "The Pitt," Mark Ruffalo-led crime drama "Task' ranks up as HBO Max's biggest breakout series of 2025. Sothat the series was expanded from a mini-series to a full-fledged second season. Ruffalo is confirmed to be returning as Pennsylvania FBI Agent Tom Brandis, but "Task" season 2 comes with a hurdle.

Since, again, "Task" was made as a mini-series, the finale was rather conclusive. The criminal case that drove the season's conflict — robberies/home invasions of drug houses used by a local biker gang — is over and done. Without getting into specific spoilers, let's just say that several "Task" season 1 cast members are off the table to return in season...

Berlinale’s Tricia Tuttle tells German government the festival has responsibility to “not shut down debate”
Image
Tricia Tuttle, festival director of the Berlinale, emphasised the festival’s guiding principles of diversity and balance when she appeared before the German Bundestag’s Culture Committee last week.

In response to questions from committee members about diversity in this year’s programme, Tuttle said: “There are plenty of places for people to find the film that’s right for them. What’s so great about art is that we all disagree about what is good and what is bad.

”That’s why we really think a lot about providing entry points for different audiences as well as [looking at] how we...

But even though everyone is very lilacly-loving to it and constantly feeds it with sweet lucky clover, the little critter does not behave unicorn-like at all. It just keeps saying no, so soon its family just calls it uNOcorn.

“One day, the uNOcorn breaks out of its cotton candy world and sets off to Nowhere.

Berlin Film Festival Full Lineup: ‘Rosebush Pruning’ Starring Riley Keough and Callum Turner, Channing Tatum’s ‘Josephine’ and More
Image
The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled the competition lineup of its 76th edition, including Karim Aïnouz’s starry “Rosebush Pruning” with Riley Keough, Callum Turner and Elle Fanning, as well as Channing Tatum’s latest feature “Josephine.”

This edition is the second year under artistic director Tricia Tuttle and looks to have a strong international emphasis, with Afghan director Shahrbanoo Sadat’s romantic comedy “No Good Men” kicking off the festival and celebrated German director Wim Wenders set to succeed Todd Haynes as jury president.

A German co-production, “No Good Men” is a romantic comedy set inside a Kabul newsroom during the democratic era before the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

After last year’s edition saw the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Robert Pattinson presenting films at the Palast, this edition’s star power is expected to come largely from buzzy titles in the Panorama and Special Gala sections,...

A Poem for Little People review – Ukraine’s war with Russia seen through eyes of emergency evacuation team
Ivan Sautkin films efforts to help residents abandon their frontline homes, as well as a pensioner acting as a spy for the Ukrainian army from the Russian border

There is a scene in this Ukrainian documentary in which a woman gruffly shrugs off the offer of evacuation from her property on the frontline. Her son has put in the request to the volunteer humanitarian team ferrying civilians to safety in the east of the country. But she is caring for her brother, who is paralysed, the woman protests – and what about her German shepherd? As explosions boom terrifyingly close, a volunteer patiently explains that his team will carry her brother...

‘Mortician’ Director Abdolreza Kahani Imagines Power Vacuum in Iran in Dark Comedy ‘Empty Heaven’ (Exclusive)
Image
In recent weeks, as Iran’s supreme leader has unusually acknowledged that thousands of protesters were killed amid a nationwide crackdown, the Islamic Republic has appeared to turn inward once again, sealing off communications and retreating into repression.

For Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, now in his fourth decade of rule, this posture reflects a long-standing logic: survival through isolation, control and force. Yet the scale of unrest and the regime’s own admission this weekend of mass violence have made questions about its durability feel newly immediate.

It is within this atmosphere of silence, disconnection and institutional paralysis that Canada-based Iranian filmmaker Abdolreza Kahani is setting his latest feature, “Empty Heaven,” a dark comedy imagining what happens when the machinery of power abruptly stops responding even to those who serve it.

Set against a moment of apparent institutional collapse, the film centers on a group of Islamic Republic–affiliated agents operating...

Joko Anwar’s Horror-Comedy ‘Ghost in the Cell’ Unveils International Teaser Ahead of Berlin Premiere (Exclusive)
Image
Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar has unveiled the international teaser for his horror-comedy “Ghost in the Cell” as the film prepares for its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival’s Forum section.

Set within an Indonesian correctional facility, the narrative follows inmates whose survival instincts are tested when a mysterious new prisoner arrives accompanied by a supernatural entity that targets those with the darkest aura. As deaths mount, the incarcerated population discovers that collective action may be their only path to survival.

“Beneath its supernatural surface lies something very real: the massive deforestation in Indonesia and the way this destruction is too often met with silence or neglect,” Anwar said in his director’s statement. “The ghost in this film is not only a presence haunting the cells, but also a reminder of consequences we choose not to face.”

The production represents another collaboration between Anwar and producer Tia Hasibuan...

Stanley Kubrick in Orange mécanique (1971)
Aryan Papers review – Holocaust-themed thriller means well but turns out to be a shockingly poor effort
Stanley Kubrick in Orange mécanique (1971)
We are in 1942 Stuttgart – though the sight of modern wheelie bins says otherwise – as a woman at a facility dedicated to breeding Aryan babies tries to smuggle two Jewish children to safety

This second world war-set drama should not be confused with a famous unrealised film project of similar name. That one is the Holocaust-themed feature based on the novel Wartime Lies by Louis Begley that Stanley Kubrick tinkered with for years before finally abandoning; Suspiria director Luca Guadagnino is now rumoured to be trying to get it off the ground. Like the Kubrick/Guadagnino, this Aryan Papers, written and directed by ultra-low-budget film-maker Danny Patrick, takes its name from the Nazi-issued certificate,...

Image
Acclaimed Indian filmmakers Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane have joined forces to present “Thursday Special,” a short film by Indian National Award winner Varun Tandon that has earned significant recognition on the international festival circuit.

The intimate drama, which explores themes of love, companionship and the passage of time, recently claimed the Most Poetic Film Award at Serbia’s Küstendorf Film Festival 2025, a distinction personally selected by renowned director Emir Kusturica.

“Thursday Special” stars Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama as Ram and Shakuntala, an elderly married couple whose relationship is anchored by their mutual passion for food and a weekly Thursday tradition. Karan Luthra produces, with Tandon penning the script alongside co-writer and executive producer Krati Tandon.

Sircar, whose directing credits include “Piku,” “Vicky Donor” and “October,” praised the film’s understated approach. “Thursday Special really moved me with its simplicity and gentle storytelling,” he said, drawing comparisons to his own unreleased feature “Shoe Bite,...

X-Men: The Animated Series' Beast Actor Had A Cameo In The First Live-Action Movie
Image
One can admire the makers of 1992's "X-Men: The Animated Series" for their gall. The world of X-Men, as it appears in Marvel Comics, is vast and complicated, involving hundreds of characters and decades of soap opera-like drama that even deep-cut fans have trouble following. The makers of "The Animated Series" elected to throw viewers into the deep end, trusting that kids would be able to keep track of the show's dozen main characters. Also, they didn't dramatically change the designs of the X-Men, allowing them to look just as silly in the cartoon as they do on the page. Specifically, they looked like the way Jim Lee designed them a few years earlier.

Margot Robbie's 2025 Fantasy Box Office Flop On Netflix Deserves A Second Look
Image
Movie audiences are often only willing to watch love stories in particular contexts. As a dash of spice thrown into a genre movie they're generally welcomed. As a feature of a gritty prestige drama, they're typically lauded. And within the confines of the romantic comedy (despite whichever side the emphasis is placed), they're appreciated. Yet the romantic fantasy film, especially if it happens to be particularly earnest, is often derided.

That wasn't always the case, of course. Filmmakers like Preston Sturges and especially Ernst Lubitsch made their careers on the backs of starry-eyed dramedies about swooning adult romance. Sadly, the rise of cynicism over the past half-century or so mixed...

Why Tom Hiddleston's Original Loki Costume Was Straight-Up Bad For His Health
Image
Kenneth Branagh's 2011 fantasy hit "Thor" is a brazenly ridiculous movie. It follows the adventures of the Norse gods Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Odin (Anthony Hopkins), and Heimdall (Idris Elba), and their part in the shining CGI realm of Asgard. They are not the gods as seen in Norse mythology, however, but the Marvel Comics versions of the characters. This means they are actually powerful interdimensional aliens (!) who modeled their look and appearance from Earth's northern gods in the 10th century. Their magical items, like Thor's enchanted hammer (which you can grab a replica of right here), are actually a form of super-advanced technology. These kinds of sci-fi...

Avatar Director James Cameron Got Angry With A Group Of Film Students - For Good Reason
Image
Talk to anyone who's worked with James Cameron over the years, and they'll tell you the director has finally chilled out considerably of late. Okay, he's still prone to fits of pique, but he's no longer the man who once forced Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio to shout "We are not animals!" as she stormed off the set of "The Abyss."

This kinder, gentler Cameron has been unusually even-tempered and reflective while doing press for "Avatar: Fire and Ash." Even when he's asked for the umpteenth time about ignorant assertions that the "Avatar" movies are animated works, he never gets harsher than firing off a terse dismissal.

This doesn't mean you can't...

How Valentino Made Hollywood the Enduring Obsession of the Fashion World
Image
At Variety, we talk a lot about the soft power of the red carpet. We live in an age where “image architect” is a vaunted job title, thanks to the serious economic and cultural impact the right look can offer stars and brands.

We can largely thank Valentino Garavani, who died at 93 on Monday, for creating this mutually beneficial relationship. In the late ’70s, European fashion houses became global enterprises. As the designer of deeply glamorous and dreamlike gowns, Mr. Valentino (as he was known) saw the writing on the wall. Celebrities and artists — particularly actresses — would come to reinvent how fashion captivated culture and commerce. His muses are renowned, from Jackie Kennedy to Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts to Cate Blanchett.

Celebrated documentary filmmaker Matt Tyrnauer chronicled the designer’s opulent lifestyle and pioneering spirit in the 2008 movie “Valentino: The Last Emperor.” The project premiered at the Venice Film Festival that year,...

12 TV Main Character Deaths That Were Way Too Disrespectful
Image
Everybody has at least one TV show where the characters on it feel more like family than ... well, their families. Whether it's a long-running comfort sitcom, or the latest drama everyone's talking about, television is designed to string audiences along. It does this with storytelling, compelling characters, and most of all, never knowing what twists are in store from episode to episode.

But like any television show, nothing lasts forever. It's rare actors will agree to play a character until they're dead, especially the worst main characters in popular sitcoms. Actors want to move on to other projects, or the shows themselves simply must end with not a whimper but...

Clint Eastwood And Tim Burton Almost Teamed Up For A Spooky Western
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Back in 1994, Tim Burton directed what remains the greatest film of his career: "Ed Wood." The biopic won Academy Awards for Martin Landau (Best Supporting Actor) and Rick Baker (Best Makeup), and though it was Burton's first box office disappointment, Hollywood still held it in high regard. So, apparently, did Clint Eastwood.

Burton was eager to get a film into production after finishing "Ed Wood," and he came across a piece of material that was half-wheelhouse and half-departure for him. The project was based on "The Hawkline Monster: A Gothic Western," a novel by Richard Brautigan about a young...

The Rip Fans Will Love Arnold Schwarzenegger's Gritty Action Thriller Streaming On Netflix
Image
Everyone loves a good Matt Damon/Ben Affleck team-up, which is part of why "The Rip" was the first must-watch Netflix movie of 2026. But the film had more going for it than a pair of best friends who also happen to be two of the biggest stars in the world. Its gritty crime drama action might have been too unrelentingly grim for some, but the film maintained a consistent tone throughout and immersed us in the world of a Tactical Narcotics Team and the drug dealers with which they're engaged in a never-ending battle. So, if you're not quite ready to leave that world behind, perhaps you'd consider Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Sabotage,...

Timothy Busfield Edited Out of Amazon MGM Movie ‘You Deserve Each Other’ Following Child Sex Abuse Allegations
Image
Timothy Busfield will be edited out of the upcoming Amazon MGM film “You Deserve Each Other” after he was accused of groping a 7-year-old boy on the set of “The Cleaning Lady,” Variety had learned.

This is the second project involving Busfield to be affected in the wake of his sexual abuse allegations. On Jan. 12, NBC pulled an episode of “Law & Order: Svu” that guest-starred Busfield from its schedule. The episode was set to debut on Jan. 22.

On Jan. 9, an arrest warrant was issued against Busfield on two counts of sexual abuse involving a minor. The investigation stems from twin boys who appeared on the TV series “The Cleaning Lady” in 2022. Busfield was the director at the time.

On Jan. 13, Busfield turned himself in at the Metro Detention Center in Albuquerque. He will remain there until his court hearing on Tuesday. He faces three charges — two counts of criminal sexual contact with a child,...

Is Billy Bob Thornton Leaving Landman? Here's The Truth

This post contains spoilers for "Landman."

"Landman" has been yet another big hit for series co-creator Taylor Sheridan, with the "Yellowstone" impresario unleashing yet another juggernaut series. But that ongoing success was called into question recently when some questionable online reports suggested the oil drama was about to lose its star. Thankfully, Billy Bob Thornton, who plays lead Tommy Norris, has now summarily dismissed such reports as "AI-generated crap" and confirmed that he'll be with the show until its end.

At the end of season 1 of "Landman" (which is inspired by a podcast that hardcore fans need to check out), Norris was promoted to president of M-Tex Oil. In a...

‘Marty Supreme’ Surpasses $100 Million Globally, Fourth A24 Film to Hit Box Office Milestone
Image
Don’t doubt the hustle of Marty Mauser.

A24‘s “Marty Supreme,” a sports dramedy starring Timothée Chalamet as a fictional table tennis champ, has surpassed $100 million globally. It’s the fourth A24 release to ever cross this box office milestone after 2022’s Oscar best picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” ($142 million), 2024’s dystopian thriller “Civil War” ($127 million) and last year’s romantic drama “Materialists” ($107 million). This benchmark is especially impressive because it’s been a challenging time for arthouse releases; “Marty Supreme” and “Materialists” were 2025’s only independent films to generate above $100 million.

Thanks to Chalamet’s unconventional marketing efforts and glowing word-of-mouth from critics and audiences, “Marty Supreme” has earned $102.3 million worldwide, including $80.8 million in the United States and $21.5 million overseas. Top international markets include the United Kingdom with $16 million, Canada with $5.7 million and Mexico with $944,000.

The Unhinged Batman Scene That Will Probably Never Make It Into James Gunn's Dcu
Image
With "All-Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder," writer Frank Miller and artists Jim Lee and Scott Williams told an alternate origin story for Dick Grayson that was, well, twisted. Really, Miller's entire "All Star" series has become infamous for being one of the most bizarre comic book runs of all time. If you're yet to read it and are interested as to why it's viewed in this way, just consider the example of "All Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder" #4, in which the Dark Knight locks his young protégé in the Batcave and forces him to hunt and kill his own food.

With the newly-established DC Universe, James Gunn...

Jurassic Park's T-Rex Was Transformed Into A Dragon For A Cult '90s Fantasy Movie
Image
Rob Cohen's high fantasy film "Dragonheart" caused a minor stir when it was released back in the spring of 1996. It was something of a hit, making over $115 million on its pretty hefty $57 million budget. The reason it cost so much to make likely had a lot to do with its extensive use of CGI effects. In the film, Dennis Quaid played a medieval knight named Sir Bowen who had once sworn to slay every last dragon in his kingdom. He became too good at his job, however, and fell into alcoholism after he realized he pretty much wiped out the species singlehandedly. His final target was a dragon named Draco,...

Zootopia 2 Just Kicked One Of The Biggest Sequels Ever Out Of The Box Office Top 10
Image
It's official: Disney's "Zootopia 2" is now one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. With another very strong weekend for the animated sequel in the books, it's made history as the biggest animated movie ever made behind only China's smash hit "Ne Zha 2" ($2.25 billion), which took the world by surprise last year (even if American audiences largely ignored it). More importantly though, one of the biggest sequels ever has now been kicked out of the global top 10 as a result of the movie's success.

"Zootopia 2" added $9.2 million domestically this past weekend to go with an impressive $24.3 million internationally. With that, its running total stands at a monster $1.7 billion worldwide,...

When It Came to Stunts, ‘One Battle After Another’ Kept It Real
Image
When stunt coordinator Brian Machleit signed on to Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “One Battle After Another,” the writer-director gave him one clear mandate. “Paul wanted to keep everything grounded in reality and to have the actors do as much action as possible themselves,” Machleit told IndieWire. That meant planning stunts in close collaboration not only with experienced actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio Del Toro — who did all his own stunt driving in the film — but newcomers like Chase Infiniti and non-professional actors like the Army Rangers who were essentially playing themselves.

“Whether it’s a veteran actor or somebody who has never been on a movie set before, the challenge was to make sure they had the tools to perform whatever Paul needed from them,” Machleit said. In both cases Machleit had to come in with a set plan that he could then modify according to the discoveries Anderson...

Image

Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" is a movie that, more than 20 years later, remains hugely important to the history of blockbuster cinema. It wasn't just a big hit that spawned an entire trilogy; it also helped prove just how big superhero movies could be, cementing the trend that we saw with comic book cinema in the years that followed. It even helped define the careers of its stars, including Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker) and Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Watson). But as it turns out, it could've defined Kate Hudson's career instead.

During an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live!" with...

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's Hidden Captain Janeway Tribute Explained
Image
Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for the series premiere of "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy."

During a time of crisis, what do Starfleet officers need most? Some reassuring words, a stirring call to action, and maybe a heroic feat or two tend to help save the day in "Star Trek." What "Starfleet Academy" presupposes, however, is that all its newest class of cadets need every now and then is a timely reminder of the past. The latest Paramount+ series has taken the novel approach of turning its main starship, the USS Athena, into a campus setting, providing the best of both worlds. But when the you-know-what hits the fan, one...

Image
Karine Jean-Pierre is ready to take the stage.

The former White House press secretary for President Joe Biden is stepping into a new kind of spotlight as the host of this year’s 17th annual African American Film Critics Awards, revealed exclusively to Variety.

Jean-Pierre, 51, joins an impressive roster of earlier Aafca emcees, following last year’s Amber Ruffin, the comedian who led the film ceremony, and “American Idol” Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks, who hosted the organization’s 2025 television honors. The ceremony, celebrating achievements in filmmaking, will take place Feb. 8 in Los Angeles.

Honorees this year include Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and director Ryan Coogler, alongside animated feature breakout “KPop Demon Hunters.” Winners are selected by more than 100 members of the African American Film Critics Association.

Jean-Pierre is no stranger to making history. She served as the 35th White House press secretary from 2022 to 2025, becoming the first Black person...

Steven Spielberg's Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movie Almost Starred An Actual Robot
Image
Many film fans will be able to tell you this, but Steven Spielberg's 2001 sci-fi film "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" was originally a project being pursued by his peer, the late Stanley Kubrick. The film was based on the 1969 short story "Super Toys Last All Summer Long" by Brian Aldiss, and Kubrick purchased the rights to the story way back in the early 1970s. The main character was a robot named David, and Kubrick felt that David should be portrayed by an actual robot. Indeed, one of the reasons Kubrick never actually made "A.I." was because he felt that VFX technology wasn't sufficiently advanced to accommodate his vision. This is "A.

5 Reasons Why 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Flopped At The Box Office
Image
Things didn't go according to plan for "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" at the box office. The latest entry in the long-running horror franchise is intended to be the middle installment in a new trilogy connecting to director Danny Boyle's 2002 classic "28 Days Later." Unfortunately, audiences didn't seem to care all that much about this one, especially when compared to the Boyle-helmed "28 Years Later."

Directed by Nia DaCosta, "The Bone Temple" opened to an estimated $13 million domestically over the weekend. That number is expected to grow to about $15 million when we account for the Monday MLK holiday. Pre-release projections had "The Bone Temple" taking in closer to $20 million,...

Amanda Seyfried Says Winning an Oscar Is Not Important: ‘Do You Remember Who Won in the Past 10 Years?’
Image
Amanda Seyfried recently told The New Yorker that winning an Oscar is not important to her. She said that she’s “gotten this far” without an Academy Award, so “why would I need one now?”

“Do you remember who won in the past ten years? It’s not the win that’s important. It’s the nomination,” Seyfried said. “It does thrust you forward. That’s a fact. Now, do I need one in a week or two or whenever? No, of course, I don’t. Would it be great? Of course it would, for every reason. But it isn’t necessary. Longevity in an actor’s career is designed. Longevity is about deliberate choices to make art among the big commercial things that are fun and pay.”

Seyfried has never won an Oscar, but she scored a best supporting actress nomination in 2021 for her work in “Mank.” Her performance...

He went on to do phenomenal work on "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope," "The Fury," and "Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back" before blowing moviegoers' minds with his werewolf transformation in John Landis' "An American Werewolf in London." Kimchi Western ‘Mash Ville,’ Polish Giallo ‘Dead by Dawn’ and Absurdist Sci-Fi ‘The Black Hole’ Join Chroma’s 2026 Slate (Exclusive)
Image
Genre distribution label Chroma has acquired North American rights to a trio of international features including “Mash Ville,” described as a whiskey-soaked kimchi western that earned its director best director honors at the Fantasia International Film Festival.

The South Korean title will be Chroma’s first release from the package, dropping digitally on Jan. 23, followed by Poland’s “Dead by Dawn” and Estonia’s “The Black Hole.”

Director Wook Hwang’s “Mash Ville” is a kimchi western following nine individuals and one corpse whose conflicting objectives lead to escalating chaos in what Chroma describes as “Coen Brothers meets Tarantino.” The film earned Hwang the best director award at the Fantasia International Film Festival.

Writer-director Dawid Torrone’s “Dead by Dawn” represents a rare giallo entry from Poland, delivering theatrical horror through stylized visuals. After its world premiere at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, the feature played Morbido Fest, Screamfest and Grimmfest,...

Guillermo del Toro and Martin Scorsese Celebrate the ‘Extraordinary Artistry’ of ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’
Image
On Saturday, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles presented the world premiere of a new 4K restoration of George Stevens’ “The Greatest Story Ever Told” (1965), one of the most ambitious and experimental of all Hollywood epics. Director Martin Scorsese, whose Film Foundation was instrumental in restoring the film (and whose “The Last Temptation of Christ” is the only biblical epic that rivals “The Greatest Story” in its audacity and complexity), provided a video introduction in which he celebrated Stevens’ masterpiece as the summation of his work.

“ The film was shot in Ultra Panavision 70 with lenses that yielded an aspect ratio of 2.76 to 1, and it was breathtaking,” Scorsese said. “But it wasn’t just the size of the image, it was the imprint of the man behind the camera who knew how to fill that frame, how to compose it. And composer seems like the right word to...

Supergirl's Relationship With Her Pet Super-Horse, Comet, Is Completely Disturbing
Image
Comet the Super-Horse was first introduced in "Adventure Comics" #293, which was published in February of 1962. Comet was one of many superpowered pets from DC Comics, alongside Krypto the Super-Dog, Streaky the Supercat, and Beppo the Super-Monkey. The horse first began his adventures with Superboy, but quickly came to be adopted by Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl, Superman's cousin. Comet and Supergirl first met in "Action Comics" #293, published in September of 1962.

Comet is possessed of human intelligence and has psychic powers, allowing him to communicate with Supergirl directly and tell her all about where he came from and why he can read minds. The horse's origin is a little unusual:...

Steve Buscemi Delivered One Of His Deepest Lines In A Kids' Movie
Image
Steve Buscemi has been in some of the best and most acclaimed TV shows and movies released in modern times, ranging from "Broadwalk Empire" to "Fargo" (and also "The Boss Baby"). He even played a memorable role in "The Sopranos" that forever changed his career trajectory. He can handle serious and dramatic roles, infusing his characters with gravitas and nuance, but he can also tackle decidedly silly and comedic parts that nevertheless carry an emotional weight.

As such, it's funny to think that what might be Buscemi's best known movie quote, and one that has a surprisingly profound meaning, doesn't come from his work with Martin Scorsese or the Coen Brothers.

Marvel Could Learn A Lesson From 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple's Ending
Image
This article contains major spoilers for "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple."

There's been a significant level-up in franchise filmmaking going on, if you haven't been paying attention, and big-budget rivals would do well to take some notes. Danny Boyle's return to the zombie genre with 2025's "28 Years Later" was everything we could've hoped for and more from a legacy sequel. Screenwriter Alex Garland's bold (and unmistakably studio-unfriendly) decision to tell a brand-new story with completely different characters paid dividends. The result was a much more emotional and deeply meaningful film than the straightforward follow-up most fans likely envisioned in their heads going in. Next, it was...

The Madison Trailer: First Look At Michelle Pfeiffer & Kurt Russell's Yellowstone Spin-Off
Image
Taylor Sheridan may be planning to depart Paramount for the greener pastures of NBCUniversal, but that doesn't mean his "Yellowstone" franchise is slowing down anytime soon. The television guru has built his empire on the power of the Western, first through Kevin Costner's popular original series and expanding through a number of spin-offs starring some of the biggest names around. That trend continues with the newest one of them — a show known as "The Madison," which also happens to double as a grand reunion for those who've seen the 1988 Robert Towne film "Tequila Sunrise".

Welcome to a "Yellowstone" extension unlike any you've seen before. Paramount has released a new trailer...

12 Best Slow Burn Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Occasionally, the most satisfying cinematic experiences come from really letting a movie sink into your skin and live with you, giving yourself over to a movie that deliberately takes the time to stretch its legs and ruminate on elements that may get brushed over more quickly in a more traditional film. Indeed, so many of the most critically acclaimed movies ever made could be categorized as "slow-burn" films, movies that ask for your patience and reward you with depth and detail.

The great thing about the "slow-burn" label is that it encompasses an endlessly diverse selection of film genres. Many...
