Both Youpon Holly and Camilia Sinensis are able to be grown in non-tropical regions while the vast majority of caffine sources have to be grown in tropical areas. Though I think Camilia S. is even more cold hardy.

It’s the same plant. They would fast and then drink enough to make themselves sick.

If you drink it like a regular tea, then yeah.
As far as starving yourself and chugging caffeine, you could do the same thing with coffee. This is just the plant they had available.
I think I might’ve had this at a restaurant at Virginia Beach which sourced all of its ingredients from within 50 miles. It was fine, but not something I considered great.
