tomjugglerto Ask Lemmy•Can anyone recommend any good science communicators for a 12 year old girl?6·2 months agoMy 12 yr old son is pretty sensitive to pigs being blown up for example but I guess not everyone is. The infamous torture episode also comes to mind, we didn’t show him that one. I’m just saying that it’s up to the parents.
tomjugglerto Ask Lemmy•Can anyone recommend any good science communicators for a 12 year old girl?11·2 months agoBill Nye went crazy? Last I heard he was involved in the groundbreaking solar sail project and speaking out about climate change, what did he do that caused you to add this warning? I’m not disputing anything just asking for information.

Also Myth Busters - not sure if available on YouTube, we ripped the DVDs long ago. Most episodes are pretty PC but some are definitely not appropriate so vetting required.
tomjugglerto Selfhosted•Based on this graph, and this graph alone, guess at what time I completely blocked OpenAI crawlersEnglish6·2 months agoYes, CloudFlare blocks agents completely if they ignore it’s restrictions. The key is scale - CloudFlare has a birds eye view of traffic patterns across millions of sites and can do statistical analysis to determine who is a bot.
I hate the necessity but it works
I’ll bet you CAN taste ants though
3 that I’m actually using, on my “Home Server” (Raspberry Pi).
One day I will be migrating the work stuff on VPS over to Docker, and then we’ll see who has the most!
tomjugglerto Technology•Opera: A Legacy Browser Lost | Why the modern hollow shell of Opera has made it impossible for me to recommend a former favorite.English20·3 months agoI’m still pissed at them for closing their old browser and deleting all my stuff. Yup, that was 12 years ago when I used to use Opera for everything - opera mobile was the best!
Let’s hope Firefox can hang in there, the last alternative to Chrome. We really need both to navigate the modern web these days
Love Ed Zitrons podcast, been listening for a while now. Nobody does a rant like him - I may totally disagree with him about the usefulness of AI but for sheer entertainment it has me hooked
Lesson from South Africa: by the time they are at your door it’s too late. Perimeter fencing, preferably a 2m high wall with razor wire AND electric fence on top (including on gate). Garden: floodlights, motion sensing alarms, beams, AI cameras. All doors and windows: bars and security gates. Inside: separate living and sleeping area with lockable gate in the hall between. Panic buttons…
None of that is going to stop a legal intrusion, each just buys you time before the paid security company arrive with guns to chase away intruders. Given time, any determined attacker will get in eventually…
Refurbished an electric guitar on my own. I found a Washburn (decent make) for next to nothing in a junk store and got a kit from Temu for the electronics which were totally shot.
Total cost was 1/4 of the price of the same guitar second hand in working order. YouTube tutorials sorted me out - only one of the pickups actually works well but it’s the humbucker which is the only one I like anyway.
Context: 12 years ago I used to play professionally but sold my equipment when I had a kid (musician job does not pay well).
I actually like my new home made electric guitar better than my old one. Also, I now play for fun which is nicer than rehearsing repertoire all the time
tomjugglerto No Stupid Questions•What do other languages use for "magic" words; or names and titles in fantasy and sci-fi novels or cinema?1·4 months agoThat old huh? Amazing!
You are right, this was 30 years ago for me. I do remember the absolute feeling of helplessness, hearing someone else’s positive experience is less than helpful. But I stand by my advice to communicate, I had no idea at the time just that one thing can turn it around
tomjugglerto No Stupid Questions•What do other languages use for "magic" words; or names and titles in fantasy and sci-fi novels or cinema?13·4 months agoProfessional magician here - when I do my show for kids I always get them to shout out “Boom!” and explain that it’s like a special effect in the movies.
Whenever I say I’m going to teach my favourite magic word, some kid always chimes in with “Abracadabra”. I think it’s from Vaudeville - some magician made it up and everyone copied them ever since.
Not a single positive comment?
I used to be depressed, somehow pushed through. There is hope ppl.
Therapy is a real solution. Talk about it, don’t bottle up your feelings.

tomjugglerto Ask Lemmy•Which of your most fucked up exes tried to come back to your life in the most fucked up way?6·4 months agoLong ago now - ex but in the same friend group so we ended up going back to her place one night. It was all nice until we had an argument, she kicked me out but KEPT MY CAR KEYS.
I ended up walking many Kms (this was before everyone owned a cell phone) to a mutual friends house, eventually they managed to convince her to give the keys back. Apparently it was all my fault.
As someone who rides a unicycle professionally: what type of unicycle? Is the company specifying a particular brand because I only ride Nimbus.
