I looked up who Anne Hathaway was (is) before reading the last line and so going back to the meme I was pleasantly surprised I wasn’t entirely wrong in doing that.

I’d say the joke isn’t just about Turing being out of character by characterizing himself in a way he really wasn’t (as in he didn’t really go around saying he was gay, but the UK government made a big deal out of it), but mostly about him being more interested in technological progress that solved something he might have cared about just a bit instead of his own field of research, which he most certainly cared about a lot.

I get that you are concerned, I just think it’s a bit of an overreaction on a site where neither OP nor probably anyone else seeing this meme thought “haha it’s funny because he was gay as in going to hell”.

I would say starting an argument from a point of view which the other is guaranteed to agree with is a great tool to convince people.

In this case it’s pretty obvious that people who say shit like “women only exist to bare children” will also look up to people with great achievements to their name. As such these two beliefs can be played against eachother.

If it won’t convince the original bum saying the stupid, it will be a very spectacular way to disarm their logic in front of other people with similar but not so extreme opinions.

Next April 30th, Hitler Death Day at my house. I’ll convert until then, you do the same.
